Exercise 5.8 - A good estimate on one eigenstate, scaled by its squared amplitude, bounds the readout of both registers

Each eigenstate’s estimate survives in proportion to its weight.

The Exercise

Phase estimation runs on two registers: a control register CC, measured at the end to give an estimate of a phase, and a target register SS. With the target in an eigenstate |uj⟩|u_j\rangle of the unitary whose phases are estimated, the procedure leaves the control in a state |φj⟩|\varphi_j\rangle and the target in |uj⟩|u_j\rangle. The eigenstates |uj⟩|u_j\rangle form an orthonormal basis of the target, and a target prepared in a superposition ∑jcj|uj⟩\sum_j c_j |u_j\rangle ends, by linearity, with the two registers in |Ψ⟩=∑jcj|φj⟩⊗|uj⟩.|\Psi\rangle = \sum_j c_j \, |\varphi_j\rangle \otimes |u_j\rangle .(1)

Suppose that measuring the control in the state |φk⟩|\varphi_k\rangle gives a good estimate, an outcome in a set GG, with probability at least 1−ϵ1-\epsilon. The exercise asks to show that measuring the control of |Ψ⟩|\Psi\rangle in the same way, and the target in the basis of eigenstates, gives a good estimate together with the eigenstate |uk⟩|u_k\rangle with probability at least |ck|2(1−ϵ)|c_k|^2(1-\epsilon).

Systems and States

A quantum system SS is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system A⊗BA \otimes B of two quantum systems AA and BB is the quantum system whose state space is the tensor product of the state spaces of AA and BB.✦ The two registers of phase estimation form the composite system C⊗SC \otimes S.

A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS is a unit vector in the state space of SS.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS determines the state |ψ⟩⟨ψ||\psi\rangle\langle\psi| of SS, the projector onto the vector |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle.✦

Measurements

A measurement MM on a quantum system SS with a finite set Ω\Omega of outcomes is a family of operators MiM_i on the state space of SS, one for each outcome i∈Ωi \in \Omega, satisfying the completeness relation ∑i∈ΩMi†Mi=1.\sum_{i \in \Omega} M_i^\dagger M_i = 1 .(2)✦ The positive operator valued measure (POVM) of MM assigns to the outcome ii the effect Ei=Mi†MiE_i = M_i^\dagger M_i.✦ The probability of the outcome ii when MM is performed on a state ρ\rho of SS is given by the Born rule, pρM(i)=Tr⁡(MiρMi†)=Tr⁡(Eiρ).p^M_\rho(i) = \operatorname{Tr}\bigl(M_i \rho M_i^\dagger\bigr) = \operatorname{Tr}(E_i \rho) .(3)✦ On a pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle we write pψM(i)p^M_\psi(i) for the probability on its state |ψ⟩⟨ψ||\psi\rangle\langle\psi|.

The projective measurement of SS in an orthonormal basis {|uj⟩}\{|u_j\rangle\} of its state space, indexed by a finite set JJ, is the measurement on SS with outcomes in JJ whose operator for the outcome jj is the projector |uj⟩⟨uj||u_j\rangle\langle u_j|.✦

For a measurement MM on AA, the measurement MM on the first factor of A⊗BA \otimes B is the measurement on A⊗BA \otimes B with the same outcomes whose operator for the outcome ii is Mi⊗1BM_i \otimes 1_B, with 1B1_B the identity on the state space of BB.✦ Likewise a measurement MM on BB, on the second factor, has the operators 1A⊗Mi1_A \otimes M_i.✦

The cascade of two measurements LL and MM on the same system SS, with outcome sets Ω\Omega and Ω′\Omega', is the measurement on SS that performs LL and then MM.✦ Its outcomes are the pairs (l,m)(l, m) in Ω×Ω′\Omega \times \Omega', and its operator for (l,m)(l, m) is the composite MmLlM_m L_l.

The joint readout of a measurement MM on CC and an orthonormal basis {|uj⟩}\{|u_j\rangle\} of the state space of SS is the measurement NN on C⊗SC \otimes S that performs MM on the first factor and then the projective measurement in the basis on the second factor.✦ Its outcomes are the pairs (i,j)(i, j), and its operators are N(i,j)=(1C⊗|uj⟩⟨uj|)(Mi⊗1S)=Mi⊗|uj⟩⟨uj|.N_{(i,j)} = \bigl(1_C \otimes |u_j\rangle\langle u_j|\bigr)\bigl(M_i \otimes 1_S\bigr) = M_i \otimes |u_j\rangle\langle u_j| .(4)

The Claim

In the claim below the states |φj⟩|\varphi_j\rangle and the basis {|uj⟩}\{|u_j\rangle\} are arbitrary, so the output of phase estimation is a special case of it.

Theorem 1. Let CC and SS be quantum systems, MM a measurement on CC with a finite set of outcomes, and {|uj⟩}j∈J\{|u_j\rangle\}_{j \in J} an orthonormal basis of the state space of SS. Let cjc_j be complex numbers and |φj⟩|\varphi_j\rangle pure states of CC, for j∈Jj \in J, and let |Ψ⟩|\Psi\rangle be a pure state of C⊗SC \otimes S of the form (1). Let k∈Jk \in J, let GG be a set of outcomes of MM and ϵ\epsilon a real number, and suppose that MM performed on the state |φk⟩⟨φk||\varphi_k\rangle\langle\varphi_k| gives an outcome in GG with probability at least 1−ϵ1-\epsilon. Then the probabilities of the joint readout NN of (4) on |Ψ⟩|\Psi\rangle satisfy ∑i∈GpΨN(i,k)≥|ck|2(1−ϵ).\sum_{i \in G} p^N_\Psi(i, k) \ \ge\ |c_k|^2 \, (1-\epsilon) .(5)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the joint readout NN of (4) on the composite system C⊗SC \otimes S, and over the Born probabilities (3) of MM and of NN on the states |φk⟩⟨φk||\varphi_k\rangle\langle\varphi_k| and |Ψ⟩⟨Ψ||\Psi\rangle\langle\Psi|.

The library proves that the projector onto a unit vector is a density operator, so that |φk⟩⟨φk||\varphi_k\rangle\langle\varphi_k| and |Ψ⟩⟨Ψ||\Psi\rangle\langle\Psi| are states, and that the effects EiE_i are positive and sum to the identity. It proves the completeness relation (2) for the projectors of an orthonormal basis, which satisfy P†P=PP^\dagger P = P for each projector PP of the basis and sum to the identity; for the operators Mi⊗1BM_i \otimes 1_B and 1A⊗Mi1_A \otimes M_i, since (Mi⊗1B)†(Mi⊗1B)=Mi†Mi⊗1B(M_i \otimes 1_B)^\dagger (M_i \otimes 1_B) = M_i^\dagger M_i \otimes 1_B; and for the composites MmLlM_m L_l of a cascade, from the relations of LL and MM.
