The Exercise

A system with dd levels has the computational basis |0⟩,…,|d−1⟩|0\rangle, \dots, |d-1\rangle. The quantum Fourier transform FF spreads each basis state evenly over all of them, with phases that are powers of the root of unity e2πi/de^{2\pi i/d}. The exercise concerns the inverse transform F−1F^{-1}: applied after FF it returns every state as it was, and on a basis state |k⟩|k\rangle it gives the same even superposition with every phase replaced by its complex conjugate.

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS is a vector of unit norm in the state space of SS, determined physically up to a global phase.✦ The qudit with dd levels is the quantum system whose state space is ℂd\mathbb{C}^d with its standard inner product, the levels labelled 0,…,d−10, \dots, d-1.✦ For a level ii, the computational basis state |i⟩|i\rangle is the pure state of the qudit whose vector has entry 11 at ii and 00 elsewhere.✦

A unitary UU of SS, the evolution of SS as a closed system, is an operator on the state space of SS whose Hilbert space adjoint U†U^\dagger satisfies U†U=UU†=IU^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = I, with II the identity operator.✦ The adjoint U†U^\dagger of a unitary UU is the unitary of SS whose operator is the Hilbert space adjoint of UU.✦ The product UVUV of two unitaries UU and VV of SS is the unitary whose operator is the composite, first VV and then UU; the identity unitary II has the identity operator. Under a unitary UU, a pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS goes to the pure state U|ψ⟩U|\psi\rangle, the vector of |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle acted on by UU.✦

The Fourier Transform

Fix a positive integer dd and let ω=e2πi/d\omega = e^{2\pi i/d} be the primitive ddth root of unity.✦ The quantum Fourier transform matrix in dimension dd is the d×dd \times d complex matrix with rows and columns labelled 0,…,d−10, \dots, d-1 and entries Fkj=ωjkd,F_{kj} = \frac{\omega^{jk}}{\sqrt{d}},(1)✦ where d\sqrt{d} is the positive root. The quantum Fourier transform FF is the unitary of the qudit with dd levels whose matrix in the computational basis is (1).✦ The inverse quantum Fourier transform F−1F^{-1} on the same qudit is the unitary F†F^\dagger, the adjoint of FF.✦

For a level kk, the inverse Fourier image of |k⟩|k\rangle is the pure state of the qudit |ϕk⟩=1d∑j=0d−1e−2πijk/d|j⟩.|\phi_k\rangle = \frac{1}{\sqrt{d}} \sum_{j=0}^{d-1} e^{-2\pi i jk/d}\, |j\rangle.(2)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let dd be a positive integer, FF the quantum Fourier transform on the qudit with dd levels and F−1F^{-1} the inverse transform. Then F−1F=I,F^{-1} F = I,(3)✦ and for every level kk, with |ϕk⟩|\phi_k\rangle as in (2), F−1|k⟩=|ϕk⟩.F^{-1} |k\rangle = |\phi_k\rangle.(4)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the quantum Fourier transform FF with matrix (1), its adjoint F−1F^{-1}, the product of two unitaries and the identity unitary of the qudit, and, in its second part, the image of a basis state |k⟩|k\rangle under F−1F^{-1} and the state |ϕk⟩|\phi_k\rangle of (2).

Of these constructions the library shows that the matrix (1) is unitary. The vector (2) has unit norm, so |ϕk⟩|\phi_k\rangle is a pure state.
