Exercise 5.21 - The shift of period finding and the Fourier states that diagonalize it

Fourier states are eigenstates of every cyclic shift.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

Period finding works with a function ff of period rr and the states |f(x)⟩|f(x)\rangle of its values, the label xx read modulo rr. The shift UyU_y moves each of them along by yy, to |f(x+y)⟩|f(x+y)\rangle. From these states one builds the Fourier states |fˆ(ℓ)⟩|\hat f(\ell)\rangle, one for each ℓ=0,…,r−1\ell = 0, \dots, r-1: superpositions of |f(0)⟩,…,|f(r−1)⟩|f(0)\rangle, \dots, |f(r-1)\rangle with equal weights and with phases that wind ℓ\ell times around the unit circle as xx runs over a period. The exercise asks to show that each Fourier state is an eigenstate of every shift UyU_y, and to write each |f(x0)⟩|f(x_0)\rangle back as a superposition of Fourier states.

A Qudit and Its Basis

A quantum system SS is given by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of a system SS is a vector of unit norm in the state space of SS, determined physically up to a global phase.✦

A unitary UU of a system SS is an operator on the state space of SS with U†U=UU†=1U^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = 1.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS is an eigenstate of a unitary UU of SS, with eigenvalue the complex number μ\mu, when U|ψ⟩=μ|ψ⟩U|\psi\rangle = \mu|\psi\rangle.✦

The qudit with dd levels is the quantum system whose state space is ℂd\mathbb{C}^d with its standard inner product.✦ For a level ii among 0,…,d−10, \dots, d-1, its computational basis state |i⟩|i\rangle is the pure state given by the standard unit vector with a one in position ii and zeros elsewhere, and the dd of them form the computational basis {|i⟩}\{|i\rangle\}, an orthonormal basis of ℂd\mathbb{C}^d. The library states the exercise on the qudit with rr levels, the basis state |x⟩|x\rangle standing for |f(x)⟩|f(x)\rangle.

Shifts of the Basis

For a permutation σ\sigma of the levels 0,…,d−10, \dots, d-1, the basis permutation gate PσP_\sigma of the qudit with dd levels is the unitary given by the linear isometry of ℂd\mathbb{C}^d onto itself that permutes the computational basis by σ\sigma: Pσ|x⟩=|σ(x)⟩.P_\sigma |x\rangle = |\sigma(x)\rangle .(1)✦

The period shift UyU_y, with rr a positive integer and yy a shift among 0,…,r−10, \dots, r-1, is the basis permutation gate of the qudit with rr levels for the cyclic shift by yy, Uy|x⟩=|(x+y)mod⁡r⟩.U_y |x\rangle = |(x + y) \bmod r\rangle .(2)✦

The Fourier States

On the qudit with dd levels, with kk a label among 0,…,d−10, \dots, d-1, the Fourier state F−1|k⟩F^{-1}|k\rangle, the image of |k⟩|k\rangle under the inverse quantum Fourier transform, is the pure state F−1|k⟩=1d∑j=0d−1e−2πijk/d|j⟩.F^{-1}|k\rangle = \frac{1}{\sqrt d} \sum_{j=0}^{d-1} e^{-2\pi i jk/d}\, |j\rangle .(3)✦ On the qudit with rr levels, with |j⟩|j\rangle read as |f(j)⟩|f(j)\rangle, this is the book’s Fourier state, |fˆ(ℓ)⟩=F−1|ℓ⟩|\hat f(\ell)\rangle = F^{-1}|\ell\rangle.

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let rr be a positive integer and let yy, ℓ\ell and x0x_0 be labels among 0,…,r−10, \dots, r-1 of the qudit with rr levels. The Fourier state |fˆ(ℓ)⟩|\hat f(\ell)\rangle is an eigenstate of the period shift UyU_y: Uy|fˆ(ℓ)⟩=e2πiℓy/r|fˆ(ℓ)⟩.U_y |\hat f(\ell)\rangle = e^{2\pi i \ell y/r}\, |\hat f(\ell)\rangle .(4)✦ The computational basis state |x0⟩|x_0\rangle is the superposition of Fourier states |x0⟩=1r∑ℓ=0r−1e2πiℓx0/r|fˆ(ℓ)⟩.|x_0\rangle = \frac{1}{\sqrt r} \sum_{\ell=0}^{r-1} e^{2\pi i \ell x_0/r}\, |\hat f(\ell)\rangle .(5)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the qudit with rr levels and its computational basis, the period shift UyU_y of (2) as a basis permutation gate, the Fourier states of (3), and the relation of eigenstate and eigenvalue between a pure state and a unitary.

Of these constructions, the library proves that each computational basis state and each Fourier state has unit norm, so that both are pure states. It proves as well that a linear isometry of a state space onto itself is a unitary operator, which makes every basis permutation gate, and with it the period shift, a unitary of the qudit.
