Exercise 5.10 - The first power of 5 equal to 1 in the integers modulo 21

The order of 5 modulo 21 is 6.

The Exercise

For positive integers xx and NN with no common factor, the order of xx modulo NN, written ord⁡N(x)\operatorname{ord}_N(x), is the least positive integer rr with xr≡1(mod⁡N).x^r \equiv 1 \pmod{N}.(1) It is the period of the sequence x,x2,x3,…x, x^2, x^3, \dots taken modulo NN, the quantity that quantum order finding estimates.

The exercise takes N=21N = 21 and x=5x = 5, which share no factor, and asks to show that the order is 66. 51≡5,52≡4,53≡20,54≡16,55≡17,56≡1(mod⁡21),5^1 \equiv 5,\quad 5^2 \equiv 4,\quad 5^3 \equiv 20,\quad 5^4 \equiv 16,\quad 5^5 \equiv 17,\quad 5^6 \equiv 1 \pmod{21},(2)

The Claim

The library states the claim in the ring ℤ21\mathbb{Z}_{21} of integers modulo 2121, where the congruence (1) is the equation 5r=15^r = 1, so that the order of 55 modulo 2121 is the order of the element 55 of that ring.

Theorem 1. In the ring of integers modulo 2121, the order of 55 is 66: ord⁡21(5)=6.\operatorname{ord}_{21}(5) = 6.(3)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated for the element 55 of the ring of integers modulo 2121.
