Theorem 4.3 - The Lie product formula in a real Banach algebra, and the Trotter formula it contains

Alternating short steps give the exponential of a sum.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

A system evolves under a Hamiltonian H=A+BH = A + B that is the sum of two Hermitian terms, each of which is easy to evolve under alone. When AA and BB do not commute, the evolution e−iHte^{-iHt} for a time tt is in general not e−iAte−iBte^{-iAt} e^{-iBt}. The Trotter formula recovers it from the two pieces: cut tt into nn steps of length t/nt/n, in each step evolve under AA for t/nt/n and then under BB for t/nt/n, and the product of the nn steps tends to e−iHte^{-iHt} as nn grows, for every real tt.

A Real Banach Algebra

The library states the Lie product formula, for any two elements of a real Banach algebra. A real Banach algebra 𝒜\mathcal{A} is an algebra over the real numbers with a norm in which it is complete and which satisfies ∥xy∥≤∥x∥∥y∥\|xy\| \le \|x\| \, \|y\|. The exponential of an element xx of 𝒜\mathcal{A} is the sum of the power series exp⁡(x)=∑k=0∞xkk!,\exp(x) = \sum_{k=0}^{\infty} \frac{x^{k}}{k!},(1) which converges in norm for every xx. On the operators of a finite-dimensional system’s state space, with the operator norm, this is a real Banach algebra, and there (1) is the matrix exponential.

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let 𝒜\mathcal{A} be a real Banach algebra, and let xx and yy be any two elements of 𝒜\mathcal{A}, commuting or not. Then, in the norm of 𝒜\mathcal{A}, limn→∞(exp⁡(xn)exp⁡(yn))n=exp⁡(x+y).\lim_{n \to \infty} \Bigl( \exp\bigl(\tfrac{x}{n}\bigr) \exp\bigl(\tfrac{y}{n}\bigr) \Bigr)^{n} = \exp(x + y).(2)✦

With x=−iAtx = -iAt and y=−iBty = -iBt in the algebra of operators on the state space, this is the Trotter formula of the exercise.

What Is Checked

About 𝒜\mathcal{A}, xx, and yy, the library proves the limit (2).✦
