Exercise 4.7 - The product XYXXYX equals −Y-Y as complex matrices

Conjugating YY by XX reverses its sign.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

The exercise is about a single qubit and two of its Pauli operators, XX and YY. It asks for the product XYXXYX, the operator YY applied between two bit flips, and the answer is −Y-Y.✦

The Pauli Matrices

The library states the claim for the matrices of XX and YY. The Pauli matrix XX is the complex 2×22 \times 2 matrix X=(0110).X = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}.(1)✦ The Pauli matrix YY is the complex 2×22 \times 2 matrix Y=(0−ii0),Y = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{pmatrix},(2)✦ with ii the imaginary unit.

The Claim

Theorem 1. The Pauli matrices XX and YY of (1) and (2) satisfy XYX=−Y.XYX = -Y.(3)✦

What Is Checked

The equality (3) is one of matrices: all four entries agree, with no global phase left free.
