The Exercise
Two quantum systems and are in a product state: is in a pure state , in a pure state , and the composite system in . An observer with access to alone describes by its reduced density operator, the partial trace of the joint state over . The exercise is to show that this reduced state is pure.
Systems and States
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system of two quantum systems and is the quantum system whose state space is the tensor product of the state spaces of and .✦
A pure state of a quantum system is a vector in the state space of of unit norm, (1)✦
For pure states of and of , the product is the pure state of whose vector is the tensor product of the two vectors.✦ We also write it .
A state of a quantum system is a density operator on the state space of : a positive operator of unit trace.✦
A pure state of determines the state of , the projector of rank one onto , which acts on a vector of the state space as (2)✦
A state of is pure when it is the projector onto some pure state of , (3)✦
The Partial Trace
The reduced state on of a state of the composite system is the state of obtained by tracing out against an orthonormal basis of the state space of , (4)✦ where is the identity on the state space of .
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let and be quantum systems, a pure state of and a pure state of . Then the reduced state on of the state of is pure: (5)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the product of a pure state of and a pure state of , the state it determines, its partial trace (4) over , and purity of a state of in the sense of (3).
The library proves that the product of two pure states has unit norm, the norm of a product vector being the product of the norms, so that is a pure state of . It proves as well that the projector onto a unit vector is a density operator, and that the partial trace of a density operator is again a density operator; and its reduced state on are therefore states.
