Exercise 2.63 - The polar form of the operators of a general measurement

Measurement operators as a unitary times a square root.

The Exercise

A general measurement on a quantum system has a measurement operator MiM_i for each outcome ii. It determines a positive operator valued measure (POVM): a family of positive operators EiE_i, one for each outcome, that sum to the identity. The exercise is to show that each measurement operator is a unitary times the positive square root of the corresponding POVM element. This is the polar decomposition of MiM_i.

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦

A measurement {Mi}\{M_i\} on SS with a finite set of outcomes is a family of measurement operators MiM_i on the state space of SS, one for each outcome ii, satisfying the completeness relation ∑iMi†Mi=I.\sum_i M_i^\dagger M_i = I .(1)✦

The POVM of a measurement {Mi}\{M_i\} on SS is the POVM whose element for the outcome ii is the operator Ei=Mi†MiE_i = M_i^\dagger M_i(2)✦ on the state space of SS. The square root E\sqrt{E} of a positive operator EE is the positive operator whose square is EE.

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let {Mi}\{M_i\} be a measurement on a quantum system SS, and let {Ei}\{E_i\} be its POVM. For every outcome ii there is a unitary operator UiU_i on the state space of SS with Mi=UiEi.M_i = U_i \sqrt{E_i} .(3)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over a measurement on a quantum system and the POVM that the measurement determines through (2). Of this construction the library proves that it yields a POVM: every EiE_i is a positive operator, and the completeness relation (1) gives ∑iEi=I\sum_i E_i = I.
