Exercise 2.50 - A real two by two matrix factored into one unitary and a square root on either side

Left and right polar decompositions of one matrix.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

The matrix AA of the exercise is the real 2×22 \times 2 matrix A=(1011).A = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix}.(1)✦ The exercise asks for its left and right polar decompositions: a unitary UU and positive matrices JJ and KK such that A=UJA = UJ, the left decomposition, and A=KUA = KU, the right one.

The Three Factors

The unitary factor UU, common to both decompositions, is the real 2×22 \times 2 matrix U=15(2−112).U = \frac{1}{\sqrt{5}} \begin{pmatrix} 2 & -1 \\ 1 & 2 \end{pmatrix}.(2)✦

The factor JJ of the left decomposition is the real 2×22 \times 2 matrix J=15(3112),J = \frac{1}{\sqrt{5}} \begin{pmatrix} 3 & 1 \\ 1 & 2 \end{pmatrix},(3) and the factor KK of the right decomposition is the real 2×22 \times 2 matrix K=15(2113).K = \frac{1}{\sqrt{5}} \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 1 & 3 \end{pmatrix}.(4)

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let AA, UU, JJ and KK be the real 2×22 \times 2 matrices (1) to (4). Then UU is unitary, U†U=UU†=I,U^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = I,(5)✦ JJ and KK are the positive square roots J=A†A,J = \sqrt{A^\dagger A},(6)✦ K=AA†,K = \sqrt{A A^\dagger},(7)✦ and AA has the left and right polar decompositions A=UJ,A = UJ,(8)✦ A=KU.A = KU.(9)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the matrices (1) to (4).

The library proves of them that UU is unitary, (5), that JJ and KK are the square roots (6) and (7), and that the products (8) and (9) both give back AA.
