Exercise 2.40 - The commutators of the Pauli matrices, pair by pair and in one formula with the Levi-Civita symbol

The commutator of two Pauli matrices gives the third.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

The exercise is about the three Pauli matrices XX, YY and ZZ of a qubit and their commutators, the commutator of two matrices AA and BB being [A,B]=AB−BA[A, B] = AB - BA. It asks for the commutator of each pair of Pauli matrices, and then for one formula that gives all of them at once, in terms of the Pauli matrices numbered 11, 22, 33 and the Levi-Civita symbol, the antisymmetric symbol on three indices.

The Pauli Matrices

The Pauli matrices XX, YY and ZZ are the complex 2×22 \times 2 matrices X=(0110),Y=(0−ii0),Z=(100−1),X = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Y = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Z = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix},(1) with ii the imaginary unit.

The Pauli matrices σj\sigma_j, for j=1,2,3j = 1, 2, 3, are the components of the Pauli vector σ→\vec{\sigma}, the same three matrices taken in this order: σ1=X,σ2=Y,σ3=Z.\sigma_1 = X, \qquad \sigma_2 = Y, \qquad \sigma_3 = Z.(2)✦

The Levi-civita Symbol

The Levi-Civita symbol εjkl\varepsilon_{jkl} is the integer symbol on three indices jj, kk, ll from {1,2,3}\{1, 2, 3\} that vanishes whenever two of the indices coincide and on the six permutations of (1,2,3)(1, 2, 3) takes the values ε123=ε231=ε312=1,ε132=ε213=ε321=−1.\varepsilon_{123} = \varepsilon_{231} = \varepsilon_{312} = 1, \qquad \varepsilon_{132} = \varepsilon_{213} = \varepsilon_{321} = -1.(3)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. The Pauli matrices satisfy the commutation relations [X,Y]=2iZ,[X, Y] = 2iZ,(4)✦ [Y,Z]=2iX,[Y, Z] = 2iX,(5)✦ [Z,X]=2iY.[Z, X] = 2iY.(6)✦ For any two indices jj and kk in {1,2,3}\{1, 2, 3\}, the commutator of σj\sigma_j with σk\sigma_k is [σj,σk]=2i∑l=13εjklσl.[\sigma_j, \sigma_k] = 2i \sum_{l=1}^{3} \varepsilon_{jkl} \, \sigma_l .(7)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the matrices XX, YY and ZZ written out entry by entry in (1), their numbering as σ1\sigma_1, σ2\sigma_2, σ3\sigma_3 in (2), and the integer values of the Levi-Civita symbol in (3); the commutator is the matrix commutator AB−BAAB - BA.

About these matrices the library proves the four identities of the theorem as equalities of complex 2×22 \times 2 matrices: (4), (5) and (6) for XX, YY and ZZ themselves, and (7) for each of the nine ordered pairs (j,k)(j, k).
