Exercise 2.30 - The Kronecker product of two Hermitian matrices of any sizes is Hermitian

The tensor product of two Hermitian operators is Hermitian.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

Let AA be an observable of one quantum system, a Hermitian operator on its state space VV, and BB an observable of a second system, a Hermitian operator on its state space WW. Their tensor product A⊗BA \otimes B acts on V⊗WV \otimes W, the state space of the two systems together. The exercise asks to show that A⊗BA \otimes B is Hermitian, an observable of the joint system.

Hermitian Matrices and the Kronecker Product

The library states the claim for matrices. With mm and nn the dimensions of VV and WW, a basis of each makes AA an m×mm \times m matrix and BB an n×nn \times n matrix, and in the product basis of V⊗WV \otimes W, A⊗BA \otimes B becomes the matrix built from AA and BB this way, their Kronecker product.

A Hermitian matrix AA of size mm is an m×mm \times m matrix equal to its adjoint A†A^\dagger, the transpose of its complex conjugate: A†=A,(A†)ij=Aji*.A^\dagger = A, \qquad (A^\dagger)_{ij} = A_{ji}^{*}.(1)

The Kronecker product of an m×mm \times m matrix AA and an n×nn \times n matrix BB is the mn×mnmn \times mn matrix A⊗BA \otimes B whose rows and columns are labelled by pairs, an index of AA followed by an index of BB, with entries (A⊗B)(i,k),(j,l)=AijBkl.(A \otimes B)_{(i,k),(j,l)} = A_{ij}\, B_{kl}.(2) With the pairs listed in dictionary order it is the block matrix whose block in place (i,j)(i,j) is AijBA_{ij} B.

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let AA be a Hermitian m×mm \times m matrix and BB a Hermitian n×nn \times n matrix. Then their Kronecker product A⊗BA \otimes B is Hermitian: (A⊗B)†=A⊗B.(A \otimes B)^\dagger = A \otimes B.(3)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over Hermitian matrices as in (1) and their Kronecker product (2), with entries that are complex numbers or, more generally, elements of any commutative ring with a conjugation. The library proves (3) for every pair of sizes mm and nn, equal or not.
