Exercise 2.26 - The tensor powers of the plus state written out as basis sums and as vectors of amplitudes

Two and three copies of the plus state.

The Exercise

A qubit is prepared in the state |+⟩=(|0⟩+|1⟩)/2|+\rangle = (|0\rangle + |1\rangle)/\sqrt{2}, the equal superposition of the two computational basis states. Two such qubits side by side are in the joint state |+⟩⊗2|+\rangle^{\otimes 2}, and three are in |+⟩⊗3|+\rangle^{\otimes 3}. The exercise asks for both joint states written out explicitly in two ways: as sums of products of basis states such as |0⟩|1⟩|0\rangle|1\rangle, and as vectors of amplitudes computed with the Kronecker product.

Basis Kets and the Kronecker Product

For ii in {0,1}\{0, 1\}, the computational basis ket |i⟩|i\rangle is the vector of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 with entry 11 in position ii and 00 in the other, so that |0⟩=(1,0)|0\rangle = (1, 0) and |1⟩=(0,1)|1\rangle = (0, 1).✦ The state |+⟩|+\rangle is the vector of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 whose two entries are both the number 1/21/\sqrt{2}: |+⟩=(12,12).|+\rangle = \left( \tfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}, \, \tfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}} \right).(1)✦

For a vector |a⟩|a\rangle with complex entries aia_i indexed by a set II and a vector |b⟩|b\rangle with complex entries bjb_j indexed by a set JJ, the Kronecker product |a⟩⊗|b⟩|a\rangle \otimes |b\rangle is the vector indexed by the pairs (i,j)(i, j) in I×JI \times J with entries (|a⟩⊗|b⟩)(i,j)=aibj.\bigl( |a\rangle \otimes |b\rangle \bigr)_{(i,j)} = a_i \, b_j .(2)✦

The twofold power of |+⟩|+\rangle is the vector |+⟩⊗2=|+⟩⊗|+⟩|+\rangle^{\otimes 2} = |+\rangle \otimes |+\rangle, whose entries are indexed by pairs of bits. For bits ii and jj, the basis product |ij⟩|ij\rangle is the vector |i⟩⊗|j⟩|i\rangle \otimes |j\rangle.

The threefold power of |+⟩|+\rangle is the vector |+⟩⊗3=|+⟩⊗(|+⟩⊗|+⟩)|+\rangle^{\otimes 3} = |+\rangle \otimes (|+\rangle \otimes |+\rangle), whose entries are indexed by a bit and a pair of bits. For bits ii, jj and kk, the basis product |ijk⟩|ijk\rangle is the vector |i⟩⊗(|j⟩⊗|k⟩)|i\rangle \otimes (|j\rangle \otimes |k\rangle).

The Claim

Theorem 1. As a vector of amplitudes and as a sum of basis products, the twofold power of |+⟩|+\rangle is |+⟩⊗2=12(1,1,1,1),|+\rangle^{\otimes 2} = \tfrac{1}{2} \, (1, 1, 1, 1),(3)✦ |+⟩⊗2=12(|00⟩+|01⟩+|10⟩+|11⟩),|+\rangle^{\otimes 2} = \tfrac{1}{2} \bigl( |00\rangle + |01\rangle + |10\rangle + |11\rangle \bigr),(4)✦ and the threefold power is |+⟩⊗3=122(1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1),|+\rangle^{\otimes 3} = \tfrac{1}{2\sqrt{2}} \, (1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1),(5)✦ |+⟩⊗3=122(|000⟩+|001⟩+|010⟩+|011⟩+|100⟩+|101⟩+|110⟩+|111⟩).\begin{aligned} |+\rangle^{\otimes 3} = \tfrac{1}{2\sqrt{2}} \bigl( &|000\rangle + |001\rangle + |010\rangle + |011\rangle \\ &+ |100\rangle + |101\rangle + |110\rangle + |111\rangle \bigr). \end{aligned}(6)✦
