The Theorem
A source prepares a quantum system in a state , again and again, each time independently of the others. After rounds the systems share a state space whose dimension grows exponentially in . Theorem 12.5 of Nielsen and Chuang, the typical subspace theorem, is about how much of that space their joint state occupies. One picks a subspace and measures whether the systems are found in it: how small can the subspace be while the answer is yes with probability close to one, once is large?
Systems, States and Copies
A quantum system is described by its state space , a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space, of dimension .✦ A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on .✦
The composite system of finitely many systems is the system whose state space is the tensor product of the spaces .✦ For states of the , the product state is the state of whose density operator is the tensor product of the .✦ The system of copies of is the composite of systems each equal to ✦, and the state of is the product state with in every position.
Spectrum and Entropy
The spectrum of is the list of its eigenvalues, repeated according to multiplicity, with an orthonormal basis of such that .✦ The are nonnegative and sum to one, a probability distribution on . The von Neumann entropy of the state is the Shannon entropy of the distribution , in nats: (1)✦
The Typical Subspace
The eigenbasis of is the orthonormal basis of the state space of formed by the product vectors (2)✦ The vector has eigenvalue , the probability of the sequence when its indices are drawn independently from .
A sequence of length is typical for with tolerance , in Shannon’s sense, when its probability lies within the window of width in the exponent around . Let be the set of these sequences and their number.✦ The typical subspace of is the span of the with . Its dimension is , and denotes the orthogonal projector onto it.
Measurements
A measurement on with a finite set of outcomes is a family of measurement operators on , one for each outcome , that satisfies the completeness relation (3)✦ The positive operator valued measure (POVM) of the measurement is the family of effects . Performed on a state , the measurement gives the outcome with the Born probability (4)✦ A measurement is projective when every is an orthogonal projector, a Hermitian operator equal to its own square; then and .✦
The block measurement of an orthonormal basis of and a labelling that assigns an outcome to every index is the measurement on whose operator for the outcome is the orthogonal projector onto the span of the labelled .✦ The typical subspace measurement on is the block measurement of the eigenbasis (2) that labels yes when and no otherwise.✦ Its operator for yes is .
The yes subspace of a measurement on with outcomes yes and no is the range of its operator .
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be a state of a quantum system , and let and .
(i) For all sufficiently large , the typical subspace measurement gives the outcome yes on with probability (5)✦
(ii) For all sufficiently large , the number of typical sequences satisfies (6)✦
(iii) Let . For all sufficiently large , every projective measurement on with outcomes yes and no whose yes subspace has dimension at most gives the outcome yes on with probability (7)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the state of the copies , the entropy (1), the typical sequences of the spectrum of and their number , the typical subspace measurement, and the projective measurements on with two outcomes and the dimension of their yes subspace, every probability being the Born probability (4).
Of these constructions the library proves that is a state, its density operator positive and of unit trace because each factor is, and that the projectors of a block measurement satisfy the completeness relation (3), so that the typical subspace measurement is a measurement.
