Theorem 12.10 - Two bounds on the coherent information of channels given by a unitary and an ancilla

Coherent information is capped by entropy and never raised by processing.

The Exercise

A system QQ starts in a state ρ\rho and passes through a noisy channel ℰ1\mathcal{E}_1, then through a second channel ℰ2\mathcal{E}_2. How much of the quantum information in ρ\rho a channel ℰ\mathcal{E} lets through is measured by the coherent information I(ρ,ℰ)I(\rho,\mathcal{E}). The theorem below is the quantum data processing inequality.

A Quantum System

A quantum system AA is a physical object whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The dimension dim⁡A\dim A of a system AA is the complex dimension of its state space.✦ Any finite dimensional complex Hilbert space HH is the state space of a system, the system modelled on HH.✦ The composite system A⊗BA\otimes B of two systems AA and BB is the system whose state space is the tensor product of their state spaces.✦

A state ρ\rho of AA is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of AA.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of AA is a unit vector in the state space of AA✦; it determines the state |ψ⟩⟨ψ||\psi\rangle\langle\psi| of AA, the projector onto that vector.✦ For a state ρ\rho of AA and a state σ\sigma of BB, the product state ρ⊗σ\rho\otimes\sigma is the state of A⊗BA\otimes B whose density operator is the tensor product of the two.✦

A unitary UU of AA is an operator on the state space of AA with U†U=UU†=1U^\dagger U = UU^\dagger = 1✦, and under it a state ρ\rho of AA evolves to the state UρU†U\rho U^\dagger.✦ The identity unitary of AA is the identity operator 11.✦ For a unitary UU of AA and a unitary VV of BB, the product unitary U⊗VU\otimes V is the unitary of A⊗BA\otimes B whose operator is the tensor product of the two.✦

An identification ee of a system AA with a system BB is a linear isometric bijection from the state space of AA onto that of BB.✦ Along it a state ρ\rho of AA is relabelled as the state eρe−1e\rho e^{-1} of BB✦, and a pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of AA as the pure state e|ψ⟩e|\psi\rangle of BB.✦ The inverse e−1e^{-1} of ee is the identification of BB with AA by the inverse map.✦ The swap identifies A⊗BA\otimes B with B⊗AB\otimes A by |u⟩⊗|v⟩↦|v⟩⊗|u⟩|u\rangle\otimes|v\rangle\mapsto|v\rangle\otimes|u\rangle✦, and the regrouping αA,B,C\alpha_{A,B,C} of three systems identifies A⊗(B⊗C)A\otimes(B\otimes C) with (A⊗B)⊗C(A\otimes B)\otimes C by |u⟩⊗(|v⟩⊗|w⟩)↦(|u⟩⊗|v⟩)⊗|w⟩|u\rangle\otimes(|v\rangle\otimes|w\rangle)\mapsto(|u\rangle\otimes|v\rangle)\otimes|w\rangle.✦

For a state ρ\rho of A⊗BA\otimes B, the reduced state ρA=Tr⁡Bρ\rho_A=\operatorname{Tr}_B\rho of AA is obtained by tracing out BB✦, and the reduced state ρB=Tr⁡Aρ\rho_B=\operatorname{Tr}_A\rho of BB by tracing out AA.✦

Channels

The dilated channel ℰU,ω\mathcal{E}_{U,\omega} on a system QQ, built from an ancilla system CC in a pure state |ω⟩|\omega\rangle and a unitary UU of Q⊗CQ\otimes C, sends a state ρ\rho of QQ to the state ℰU,ω(ρ)=Tr⁡C(U(ρ⊗|ω⟩⟨ω|)U†)\mathcal{E}_{U,\omega}(\rho) = \operatorname{Tr}_C\bigl(U(\rho\otimes|\omega\rangle\langle\omega|)U^\dagger\bigr)(1)✦ of QQ.

A channel can act on one factor of a composite system, the identity map id\mathrm{id} being applied to the other factor. For a state ρ\rho of A⊗BA\otimes B, an ancilla CC in a pure state |ω⟩|\omega\rangle and a unitary UU of B⊗CB\otimes C, the state (id⊗ℰU,ω)(ρ)(\mathrm{id}\otimes\mathcal{E}_{U,\omega})(\rho) of A⊗BA\otimes B, obtained by letting the dilated channel act on BB alone, is (id⊗ℰU,ω)(ρ)=Tr⁡C((1⊗U)(ρ⊗|ω⟩⟨ω|)(1⊗U)†)(\mathrm{id}\otimes\mathcal{E}_{U,\omega})(\rho) = \operatorname{Tr}_C\bigl((1\otimes U)(\rho\otimes|\omega\rangle\langle\omega|) (1\otimes U)^\dagger\bigr)(2)✦ Here 1⊗U1\otimes U is the product unitary of the identity unitary of AA with UU, acting on A⊗(B⊗C)A\otimes(B\otimes C).

Coherent Information

The von Neumann entropy of a state ρ\rho of a system is S(ρ)=−tr⁡(ρlog⁡ρ),S(\rho) = -\operatorname{tr}(\rho\log\rho),(3)✦ measured in nats. For a state ρ\rho of A⊗BA\otimes B, the conditional entropy S(A|B)S(A|B) and the coherent information I(A⟩B)I(A\rangle B) are S(A|B)=S(ρ)−S(ρB),I(A⟩B)=−S(A|B).S(A|B) = S(\rho) - S(\rho_B), \qquad I(A\rangle B) = -S(A|B).(4) For a state σ\sigma we write I(A⟩B)σI(A\rangle B)_\sigma.

Let ρ\rho be a state of QQ, and RR the system modelled on ℂd\mathbb{C}^d with d=dim⁡Qd=\dim Q. Write ρ=∑ipi|i⟩⟨i|\rho=\sum_i p_i|i\rangle\langle i| in an orthonormal eigenbasis, and let |iR⟩|i_R\rangle be the standard basis of ℂd\mathbb{C}^d. The canonical purification of ρ\rho is the pure state ∑ipi|i⟩|iR⟩\sum_i\sqrt{p_i}\,|i\rangle|i_R\rangle of Q⊗RQ\otimes R, and its reduced state on QQ is ρ\rho.✦ The reference purification |RQ⟩|RQ\rangle of ρ\rho is the pure state of R⊗QR\otimes Q obtained by relabelling the canonical purification along the swap.✦

For a dilated channel ℰ=ℰU,ω\mathcal{E}=\mathcal{E}_{U,\omega} on QQ, the entropy exchange S(ρ,ℰ)S(\rho,\mathcal{E}) is the entropy of the joint state of RR and QQ once ℰ\mathcal{E} has acted on QQ✦, and the coherent information I(ρ,ℰ)I(\rho,\mathcal{E}) is the entropy of the output less the entropy exchange: S(ρ,ℰ)=S((id⊗ℰ)(|RQ⟩⟨RQ|)),I(ρ,ℰ)=S(ℰ(ρ))−S(ρ,ℰ).S(\rho,\mathcal{E}) = S\bigl((\mathrm{id}\otimes\mathcal{E})(|RQ\rangle\langle RQ|)\bigr), \qquad I(\rho,\mathcal{E}) = S\bigl(\mathcal{E}(\rho)\bigr) - S(\rho,\mathcal{E}).(5)✦

For two dilated channels ℰ1\mathcal{E}_1 and ℰ2\mathcal{E}_2 on QQ, the coherent information of ρ\rho under ℰ2∘ℰ1\mathcal{E}_2\circ\mathcal{E}_1 is that of the state of R⊗QR\otimes Q the two leave when they act on QQ in turn: I(ρ,ℰ2∘ℰ1)=I(R⟩Q)σ,σ=(id⊗ℰ2)((id⊗ℰ1)(|RQ⟩⟨RQ|)).I(\rho,\mathcal{E}_2\circ\mathcal{E}_1) = I(R\rangle Q)_\sigma, \qquad \sigma = (\mathrm{id}\otimes\mathcal{E}_2) \bigl((\mathrm{id}\otimes\mathcal{E}_1)(|RQ\rangle\langle RQ|)\bigr).(6)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let ρ\rho be a state of a system QQ, and let ℰ1=ℰU1,ω1\mathcal{E}_1=\mathcal{E}_{U_1,\omega_1} and ℰ2=ℰU2,ω2\mathcal{E}_2=\mathcal{E}_{U_2,\omega_2} be dilated channels on QQ, with ancillas CC and DD in pure states |ω1⟩|\omega_1\rangle and |ω2⟩|\omega_2\rangle and unitaries U1U_1 of Q⊗CQ\otimes C and U2U_2 of Q⊗DQ\otimes D. Then I(ρ,ℰ1)≤S(ρ)I(\rho,\mathcal{E}_1) \le S(\rho)(7)✦ and I(ρ,ℰ2∘ℰ1)≤I(ρ,ℰ1).I(\rho,\mathcal{E}_2\circ\mathcal{E}_1) \le I(\rho,\mathcal{E}_1).(8)✦

What Is Checked

Both inequalities are stated over a state ρ\rho of a system QQ and channels on QQ given by their dilations (1). The coherent informations (5) and (6) are built from the reference purification |RQ⟩|RQ\rangle, the channels acting on its second factor as in (2), and the von Neumann entropy (3).

The library proves that each construction on the way yields a state: the projector onto a unit vector, the tensor product of two density operators, a density operator conjugated by a unitary or by an identification, and a partial trace of a density operator are density operators, and a relabelled pure state is again a unit vector. It proves too that the tensor product of two unitaries is unitary, so 1⊗U1\otimes U is a unitary of A⊗(B⊗C)A\otimes(B\otimes C).
