Problem 12.1 - The Holevo quantity under quantum operations, partial traces and measurements, and the Holevo bound

The Holevo bound from a quantity that never grows.

The Exercise

Alice chooses a value xx with probability pxp_x and prepares a quantum system QQ in the state ρx\rho_x; Bob receives QQ and measures it. With XX for Alice’s choice and YY for Bob’s outcome, the mutual information H(X:Y)H(X:Y) is what the measurement tells Bob about XX. The Holevo bound limits this information by the Holevo quantity of Alice’s ensemble.

The problem asks for three properties of the Holevo quantity along with the bound.

States and Entropy

A quantum system QQ is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system A⊗BA \otimes B of two systems AA and BB is the system whose state space is the tensor product of their state spaces✦, and the qudit with dd levels is the system whose state space is ℂd\mathbb{C}^d.✦

A state ρ\rho of QQ is a density operator on the state space of QQ, a positive operator of unit trace.✦ A pure state ω\omega of QQ is a unit vector in the state space of QQ✦; it defines the state |ω⟩⟨ω||\omega\rangle\langle\omega|, the projector onto that vector.✦ For a level yy of the qudit, the computational basis state |y⟩|y\rangle is the pure state whose vector is the yyth standard basis vector of ℂd\mathbb{C}^d.✦

The product state ρ⊗σ\rho \otimes \sigma of a state ρ\rho of AA and a state σ\sigma of BB is the state of A⊗BA \otimes B whose density operator is the tensor product of the two.✦ The partial trace Tr⁡Bρ\operatorname{Tr}_B \rho of a state ρ\rho of A⊗BA \otimes B is the reduced state of AA obtained by tracing out BB.✦

An ensemble {px,ρx}\{p_x, \rho_x\} of states of QQ is a probability distribution pxp_x on a finite set, with a state ρx\rho_x of QQ for each xx. The average state ρ\rho of an ensemble {px,ρx}\{p_x, \rho_x\} of states of QQ is the mixture, the state of QQ with density operator ρ=∑xpxρx.\rho = \sum_x p_x \rho_x .(1)✦ The von Neumann entropy of a state ρ\rho is S(ρ)=−tr⁡(ρlog⁡ρ)S(\rho) = -\operatorname{tr}(\rho \log \rho), the Shannon entropy of its eigenvalues, measured in nats.✦ The Holevo quantity χ({px,ρx})\chi(\{p_x, \rho_x\}) of an ensemble {px,ρx}\{p_x, \rho_x\} of states of QQ is the real number χ({px,ρx})=S(∑xpxρx)−∑xpxS(ρx).\chi(\{p_x, \rho_x\}) = S\Bigl(\sum_x p_x \rho_x\Bigr) - \sum_x p_x\, S(\rho_x).(2)✦

Operations and Measurements

A unitary UU of QQ is an operator on the state space of QQ with U†U=UU†=1U^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = 1✦; under it a state σ\sigma of QQ evolves into UσU†U \sigma U^\dagger.✦ For a second system CC, the ancilla, a unitary UU of Q⊗CQ \otimes C and a pure state ω\omega of CC, the dilated channel ℰU,ω\mathcal{E}_{U,\omega} on QQ sends a state ρ\rho of QQ to ℰU,ω(ρ)=Tr⁡C(U(ρ⊗|ω⟩⟨ω|)U†).\mathcal{E}_{U,\omega}(\rho) = \operatorname{Tr}_C\bigl(U (\rho \otimes |\omega\rangle\langle\omega|) U^\dagger\bigr).(3)✦

A measurement on QQ with a finite set of outcomes is a family of measurement operators MyM_y on the state space of QQ, one for each outcome yy, with ∑yMy†My=1\sum_y M_y^\dagger M_y = 1.✦ Its positive operator valued measure (POVM) is the family of effects Ey=My†MyE_y = M_y^\dagger M_y✦, and the probability of the outcome yy on a state ρ\rho of QQ is given by the Born rule, p(y∣ρ)=Tr⁡(MyρMy†)=Tr⁡(Eyρ).p(y \mid \rho) = \operatorname{Tr}(M_y \rho M_y^\dagger) = \operatorname{Tr}(E_y \rho).(4)✦

With the dd outcomes numbered 0,…,d−10, \dots, d-1, the outcome state of ρ\rho is the state of the qudit with dd levels that records the outcome: ℳ(ρ)=∑yp(y∣ρ)|y⟩⟨y|.\mathcal{M}(\rho) = \sum_y p(y \mid \rho)\, |y\rangle\langle y| .(5)✦

For an ensemble {px,ρx}\{p_x, \rho_x\} of states of QQ, the measurement gives XX and YY the joint distribution p(x,y)=pxp(y∣ρx),p(x, y) = p_x\, p(y \mid \rho_x),(6) and the mutual information H(X:Y)H(X:Y) of XX and YY is the mutual information of this joint distribution.

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let {px,ρx}\{p_x, \rho_x\} be an ensemble of states of a system QQ. For every ancilla CC, unitary UU of Q⊗CQ \otimes C and pure state ω\omega of CC, the dilated channel does not increase the Holevo quantity: χ({px,ℰU,ω(ρx)})≤χ({px,ρx}).\chi\bigl(\{p_x, \mathcal{E}_{U,\omega}(\rho_x)\}\bigr) \le \chi(\{p_x, \rho_x\}).(7)✦ For every measurement on QQ with a finite set of outcomes, the Holevo quantity of the outcome states is the mutual information of XX and YY: χ({px,ℳ(ρx)})=H(X:Y).\chi\bigl(\{p_x, \mathcal{M}(\rho_x)\}\bigr) = H(X:Y).(8)✦ If QQ is a composite system A⊗BA \otimes B, tracing out BB does not increase the Holevo quantity: χ({px,Tr⁡Bρx})≤χ({px,ρx}).\chi\bigl(\{p_x, \operatorname{Tr}_B \rho_x\}\bigr) \le \chi(\{p_x, \rho_x\}).(9)✦ For every measurement on QQ with a finite number rr of outcomes, the Holevo bound holds: H(X:Y)≤χ({px,ρx}).H(X:Y) \le \chi(\{p_x, \rho_x\}).(10)✦

What Is Checked

The four statements are about the Holevo quantity (2) of an ensemble, built on the mixture (1) and the von Neumann entropy. The first is stated over the dilated channel (3) and the third over the partial trace; the second and fourth are stated over a measurement, through its Born probabilities (4), its outcome state (5) and the joint distribution (6).

About these constructions the library proves that the Born probabilities of a measurement on a state are nonnegative✦ and sum to one✦, so that the outcome state is a mixture of the basis states |y⟩⟨y||y\rangle\langle y|, and that the effects EyE_y are positive with sum the identity. It proves that a mixture of states, the product of two states, the projector onto a unit vector, the evolved state UσU†U \sigma U^\dagger and a partial trace are density operators, so the dilated channel sends states of QQ to states of QQ.
