Exercise 12.20 - From majorization of spectra to conversion by a single measurement

Majorization gives conversion.

The Exercise

Nielsen’s theorem says when Alice and Bob can turn a shared pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle into another pure state |φ⟩|\varphi\rangle by local operations and classical communication: exactly when the reduced state ρ\rho of Alice’s system in |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle is majorized by her reduced state σ\sigma in |φ⟩|\varphi\rangle. The exercise is the direction from majorization to conversion. Given that ρ\rho is majorized by σ\sigma, find a measurement on Alice’s system whose every outcome turns ρ\rho into σ\sigma, without assuming that ρ\rho is invertible.

States and Measurements

A quantum system SS is a physical object whose mathematical realisation is its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦ A measurement {Mj}\{M_j\} on SS with a finite set of outcomes is a family of operators MjM_j on the state space of SS, one for each outcome jj, satisfying the completeness relation ∑jMj†Mj=1.\sum_j M_j^\dagger M_j = 1 .(1)✦

Majorization

The spectrum λ(ρ)\lambda(\rho) of a state ρ\rho of SS is the list λ1,…,λd\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_d of the eigenvalues of ρ\rho, each repeated according to its multiplicity, where dd is the dimension of the state space of SS. Let λ1↓(ρ)≥…≥λd↓(ρ)\lambda_1^\downarrow(\rho) \ge \dots \ge \lambda_d^\downarrow(\rho) be the spectrum of ρ\rho in decreasing order. A state ρ\rho of SS is majorized by a state σ\sigma of SS, written ρ≺σ\rho \prec \sigma, when the spectrum of ρ\rho is majorized by the spectrum of σ\sigma: for every kk, the kk largest eigenvalues of ρ\rho sum to at most the sum of the kk largest eigenvalues of σ\sigma, ∑i=1kλi↓(ρ)≤∑i=1kλi↓(σ),k=1,…,d.\sum_{i=1}^{k} \lambda_i^\downarrow(\rho) \le \sum_{i=1}^{k} \lambda_i^\downarrow(\sigma), \qquad k = 1, \dots, d .(2)✦

Conversion by a Measurement

A state ρ\rho of SS is convertible by local operations and classical communication (LOCC) to a state σ\sigma of SS, written ρ⇝σ\rho \rightsquigarrow \sigma, when a single measurement on SS turns ρ\rho into σ\sigma whatever its outcome: there are a measurement {Mj}\{M_j\} on SS and a probability distribution pjp_j on its outcomes, pj≥0p_j \ge 0 and ∑jpj=1\sum_j p_j = 1, such that MjρMj†=pjσfor every outcome j.M_j \rho M_j^\dagger = p_j \sigma \qquad \text{for every outcome } j .(3)✦

The Claim

The library states the exercise’s direction for any two states of one quantum system, the measurement acting on that system.

Theorem 1. Let ρ\rho and σ\sigma be states of a quantum system SS, and let ρ\rho be majorized by σ\sigma. Then ρ⇝σ.\rho \rightsquigarrow \sigma .(4)✦

What Is Checked

The claim’s hypothesis is majorization, (2); its conclusion is conversion by LOCC, (3), with a measurement satisfying (1).

A state is self adjoint, so its spectrum is a list of real numbers, and the library states that its entries are nonnegative and sum to one.
