Exercise 12.2 - A measurement and the register that records its outcome, as one trace preserving operation

A measurement recorded in a qudit is a channel.

The Exercise

A quantum system QQ in a state σ\sigma is measured, and the outcome yy, one of 0,…,r−10, \dots, r-1, is written into a second system AA: a register with rr levels, prepared in |0⟩|0\rangle. The exercise asks for one quantum operation ℰ\mathcal{E} on QQ and AA together that measures and records in a single step. For each outcome it leaves QQ in the state that outcome produces and the register in |y⟩|y\rangle, the outcomes mixed according to their probabilities, which is the state the book writes as Eq. (12.8). The operation must be trace preserving, and it must act on every state of the pair, not only on those with the register in |0⟩|0\rangle.

The library builds ℰ\mathcal{E} from one operation element KyK_y for each outcome yy, defined below from the measurement operators on QQ and a shift of the register. The resulting operation is trace preserving and acts on every state of the pair.

Systems and States

A quantum system SS is given by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ Two systems SS and TT form the composite system S⊗TS \otimes T, whose state space is the tensor product of theirs.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS, pure or mixed.✦

A pure state ψ\psi of SS is a unit vector of its state space✦; it determines the state |ψ⟩⟨ψ||\psi\rangle\langle\psi| of SS, the projector onto that vector.✦ For a state ρ\rho of SS and a state τ\tau of TT, the product state ρ⊗τ\rho \otimes \tau is the state of S⊗TS \otimes T whose density operator is the tensor product of those of ρ\rho and τ\tau.✦

The Register

The qudit with dd levels is the system whose state space is ℂd\mathbb{C}^d itself, with its standard inner product.✦ Its computational basis {|i⟩}\{|i\rangle\}, for i=0,…,d−1i = 0, \dots, d-1, is the orthonormal basis of standard unit vectors, |i⟩|i\rangle having a one in position ii and zeros elsewhere✦, and each |i⟩|i\rangle is a pure state of the qudit.✦ The register AA is the qudit with rr levels.

A unitary UU of a system SS is an operator on the state space of SS with U†U=UU†=1U^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = 1.✦ For a permutation π\pi of the labels 0,…,d−10, \dots, d-1, the basis permutation gate GπG_\pi of the qudit is the unitary with Gπ|x⟩=|π(x)⟩G_\pi |x\rangle = |\pi(x)\rangle for each basis vector |x⟩|x\rangle. The shift UyU_y of the register is the gate of the cyclic permutation x↦x+yx \mapsto x + y, the sum taken modulo rr: Uy|x⟩=|x+y⟩,x,y=0,…,r−1.U_y |x\rangle = |x + y\rangle, \qquad x, y = 0, \dots, r-1 .(1)✦

The Measurement and the Operation

A measurement on QQ with outcomes y=0,…,r−1y = 0, \dots, r-1 is a family of measurement operators MyM_y on the state space of QQ, one for each outcome, satisfying the completeness relation ∑y=0r−1My†My=1.\sum_{y=0}^{r-1} M_y^\dagger M_y = 1 .(2)✦ Write Ey=My†MyE_y = M_y^\dagger M_y and Ey\sqrt{E_y} for its positive square root.

For each outcome yy, the operation element KyK_y on Q⊗AQ \otimes A is the operator that acts as Ey\sqrt{E_y} on QQ and as the shift UyU_y on the register, Ky=Ey⊗Uy,y=0,…,r−1,K_y = \sqrt{E_y} \otimes U_y, \qquad y = 0, \dots, r-1 ,(3) and the operation ℰ\mathcal{E} takes a state ρ\rho of Q⊗AQ \otimes A to the state ℰ(ρ)=∑y=0r−1KyρKy†.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \sum_{y=0}^{r-1} K_y \, \rho \, K_y^\dagger .(4)✦

A map ff on the states of a system SS is a quantum channel when it is the restriction to states of a linear map Φ\Phi on the operators of the state space of SS, so that f(ρ)=Φ(ρ)f(\rho) = \Phi(\rho) for every state ρ\rho, with Φ\Phi completely positive and trace preserving: tr⁡Φ(X)=tr⁡X\operatorname{tr} \Phi(X) = \operatorname{tr} X for every operator XX.✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let QQ be a quantum system with a measurement {My}\{M_y\} of outcomes y=0,…,r−1y = 0, \dots, r-1, let AA be the qudit with rr levels, and let ℰ\mathcal{E} be the operation (4) on Q⊗AQ \otimes A. For every state σ\sigma of QQ, ℰ(σ⊗|0⟩⟨0|)=∑y=0r−1EyσEy⊗|y⟩⟨y|.\mathcal{E}\bigl(\sigma \otimes |0\rangle\langle 0|\bigr) = \sum_{y=0}^{r-1} \sqrt{E_y}\, \sigma \sqrt{E_y} \otimes |y\rangle\langle y| .(5)✦ Moreover ℰ\mathcal{E} is a quantum channel of Q⊗AQ \otimes A: there is a completely positive, trace preserving linear map Φ\Phi on the operators of Q⊗AQ \otimes A with ℰ(ρ)=Φ(ρ)for every state ρ of Q⊗A.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \Phi(\rho) \quad \text{for every state } \rho \text{ of } Q \otimes A .(6)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over a quantum system QQ of any finite dimension with a measurement {My}\{M_y\} of rr outcomes, a state σ\sigma of QQ, the register AA with its basis state |0⟩|0\rangle and the product state σ⊗|0⟩⟨0|\sigma \otimes |0\rangle\langle 0|, and the operation ℰ\mathcal{E} of (4), built from the operation elements (3) and the shifts (1).

The operation elements satisfy the completeness relation ∑yKy†Ky=1\sum_y K_y^\dagger K_y = 1, so that ℰ(ρ)\mathcal{E}(\rho) is a state of Q⊗AQ \otimes A for every state ρ\rho of Q⊗AQ \otimes A.
