The Exercise
A system starts in a state , purified by a reference system so that is in a pure state. Two quantum operations then act on in turn, first and then . Each couples through a unitary to an environment of its own, for the first and for the second, prepared in a pure state, and the reference is left alone. After the first operation the system is in the state , after the second in .
The exercise bounds the entropies left at the end against one another: those of the system, of reference and system, of reference and second environment, and the entropy exchanges of the two operations. It also bounds the coherent information of the two operations together by the entropy of the input.
The library states the bounds for a single operation and for two in turn.
A Quantum System
A quantum system is described by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space✦, and the dimension of is the complex dimension of that space.✦ The composite system of two systems and has as its state space the tensor product of their state spaces.✦
A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of .✦ A pure state of is a unit vector in the state space of ✦, and the state it determines is the projector .✦ The product state of a state of and a state of is the state of whose density operator is the tensor product of the two.✦
A unitary of is an operator on the state space of with ✦, and it evolves a state of into the state .✦ The identity is a unitary of every system.✦ For a unitary of and a unitary of , the product unitary is the unitary of whose operator is the tensor product of the two.✦
An identification of a system with a system is a linear isometry of the state space of onto that of .✦ It carries a state of to the state of ✦ and a pure state of to the pure state of ✦, and its inverse identifies with .✦ Two identifications reorder composites: the swap of with , ✦, and the regrouping of with , .✦
The reduced state of a state of is the state of left by the partial trace over ✦; the reduced state is the state of left by the partial trace over .✦
The von Neumann entropy of a state is (1)✦ in nats. For a state of one writes and . The conditional entropy of is ✦, and its coherent information is the negative of that, (2)✦
Two Operations in Turn
The dilated channel on a system , built from an environment , a pure state of and a unitary of , sends a state of to (3)✦ Every trace preserving quantum operation on arises this way, by Stinespring’s theorem.
An operation can also act on one factor of a composite. For a state of , a unitary of and a pure state of an ancilla , the dilated joint state is the state of (4)✦ in which the product unitary of the identity of with acts on and together, the factors regrouped by before and after. Tracing out the ancilla leaves the operation run on alone, .✦
The canonical purification of a state of , written in an orthonormal eigenbasis, is the pure state of .✦ Here the reference is the system with state space , , and is its standard basis. The swap carries the canonical purification to the reference purification , a pure state of with the reference first.✦
The entropy exchange of a state of under an operation on is the entropy of the state of reference and system once has acted on alone, (5)✦
In the notation of (3), and . The second operation has its own entropy exchange , given by (5) at its input .
After the first operation reference and system are in the state of (5) with , and the second, run on alone, takes them to . The composite entropy exchange of a state of under and then is the von Neumann entropy of the final state of reference and system, (6) and the coherent information of the two operations together is the coherent information (2) of the same state, .✦
Keeping the second environment instead of tracing it out gives the dilated joint state (4) of under and , the state of reference, system and second environment. The swap and the regrouping bring its factors into the order , , , and the partial trace over leaves the joint state of and , whose entropy is the escape entropy (7)✦

The entropies of the input, the composite output and the composite entropy exchange satisfy (10)✦ and (11)✦ the two outputs and the entropy exchange of the second operation satisfy (12)✦ and (13)✦ the three entropy exchanges satisfy (14)✦ (15)✦ and (16)✦ and the escape entropy satisfies (17)✦ (18)✦ and (19)✦
Theorem 3. Let be a state of a system , and let and then act on , each given by a unitary coupling to an environment in a pure state. Then (20)✦
What Is Checked
The claims are stated over a state of an arbitrary finite dimensional system and over operations given, as in (3), by a unitary of with an environment and a pure state of that environment. Their quantities are von Neumann entropies (1) of states built from these: the outputs and , the states of reference and system behind the entropy exchanges (5) and (6), and the joint state behind the escape entropy (7), together with the coherent information (2).
About these constructions the library proves that each yields a state. Conjugating a density operator by a unitary or by an identification of systems gives a density operator, and so do the tensor product of two density operators and the partial trace of one; the projector onto a unit vector is a density operator; the tensor product of two unitaries is unitary; the canonical purification has unit norm, and an identification carries a unit vector to a unit vector. Hence , , , and are density operators.
