Exercise 12.11 - The Holevo quantity of a channel as a supremum over small ensembles of pure input states

Pure input states suffice for a channel’s Holevo quantity.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

A channel ℰ\mathcal{E} takes the states of a quantum system QQ to states of QQ. A sender picks a label jj with probability pjp_j, prepares a state ρj\rho_j and sends it through the channel, so that the receiver holds the output ensemble {pj,ℰ(ρj)}\{p_j, \mathcal{E}(\rho_j)\}. The exercise concerns the Holevo quantity χ(ℰ)\chi(\mathcal{E}) of the channel, taken over all input ensembles, and asks to show that mixed inputs are never needed: the same value comes out when the inputs are pure states, and again when there are at most d2d^2 of them, dd being the dimension of the state space of QQ.

A Quantum System

A quantum system QQ is a physical object whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space✦, and the dimension dd of QQ is the dimension of that space.✦ A state ρ\rho of QQ, also called a density operator, is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of QQ; it is pure when it is a projector onto a unit vector and mixed otherwise.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩\lvert\psi\rangle of QQ is a vector of unit norm, ‖ψ‖=1\lVert\psi\rVert = 1, in the state space of QQ, fixed up to a global phase.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩\lvert\psi\rangle of QQ determines the state |ψ⟩⟨ψ|\lvert\psi\rangle\langle\psi\rvert of QQ, the projector onto that vector.✦

The von Neumann entropy of a state ρ\rho of QQ is S(ρ)=−tr⁡(ρlog⁡ρ),S(\rho) = -\operatorname{tr}(\rho \log \rho),(1)✦ where the logarithm is the natural one.

Ensembles

An ensemble {pi,ρi}\{p_i, \rho_i\} of states of QQ assigns to each label ii of a finite set a state ρi\rho_i of QQ and a weight pi≥0p_i \ge 0, with ∑ipi=1\sum_i p_i = 1. The mixture of an ensemble {pi,ρi}\{p_i, \rho_i\} of states of QQ is the state ρ‾\bar\rho of QQ with density operator ρ‾=∑ipiρi,\bar\rho = \sum_i p_i \rho_i ,(2)✦ The Holevo quantity χ({pi,ρi})\chi(\{p_i, \rho_i\}) of an ensemble {pi,ρi}\{p_i, \rho_i\} of states of QQ is the real number given by the entropy of the mixture less the average entropy of the members, χ({pi,ρi})=S(∑ipiρi)−∑ipiS(ρi).\chi(\{p_i, \rho_i\}) = S\Bigl(\sum_i p_i \rho_i\Bigr) - \sum_i p_i\, S(\rho_i).(3)✦

The Channel

A quantum channel ℰ\mathcal{E} on QQ is a map on the states of QQ that is the restriction of a completely positive, trace preserving linear map Φ\Phi on the operators of the state space of QQ: ℰ(ρ)=Φ(ρ)for every state ρ,tr⁡Φ(A)=tr⁡Afor every operator A.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \Phi(\rho) \ \text{for every state } \rho, \qquad \operatorname{tr}\Phi(A) = \operatorname{tr} A \ \text{for every operator } A.(4)✦

Each input ensemble {pj,ρj}\{p_j, \rho_j\} of states of QQ, of any finite size, yields the output ensemble {pj,ℰ(ρj)}\{p_j, \mathcal{E}(\rho_j)\} and with it a value of (3); these values form a set of real numbers.✦ The Holevo quantity χ(ℰ)\chi(\mathcal{E}) of a quantum channel ℰ\mathcal{E} on QQ is the supremum of this set, χ(ℰ)=sup{pj,ρj}χ({pj,ℰ(ρj)}).\chi(\mathcal{E}) = \sup_{\{p_j, \rho_j\}} \chi\bigl(\{p_j, \mathcal{E}(\rho_j)\}\bigr).(5)✦

The Claim

The values of (3) for the outputs of finite ensembles {pj,ψj}\{p_j, \psi_j\} of pure states form a subset of the values in (5)✦, and those from ensembles of n≤d2n \le d^2 pure states a subset of that.✦

Theorem 1. Let ℰ\mathcal{E} be a quantum channel on a system QQ of dimension dd. Then χ(ℰ)\chi(\mathcal{E}) is the supremum over all finite ensembles of pure input states, χ(ℰ)=sup{pj,ψj}χ({pj,ℰ(|ψj⟩⟨ψj|)}),\chi(\mathcal{E}) = \sup_{\{p_j, \psi_j\}} \chi\bigl(\{p_j, \mathcal{E}(\lvert\psi_j\rangle\langle\psi_j\rvert)\}\bigr),(6)✦ and also the supremum over ensembles of at most d2d^2 pure input states, χ(ℰ)=supn≤d2,{pj,ψj}j=1nχ({pj,ℰ(|ψj⟩⟨ψj|)}).\chi(\mathcal{E}) = \sup_{n \le d^2,\ \{p_j, \psi_j\}_{j=1}^{n}} \chi\bigl(\{p_j, \mathcal{E}(\lvert\psi_j\rangle\langle\psi_j\rvert)\}\bigr).(7)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over a quantum channel (4) on a system of dimension dd and over its Holevo quantity (5), the supremum over all finite input ensembles.
