The Exercise
Two states and of a composite system are given. An experimenter with access to alone sees only the reduced states and , what remains of the two states once is discarded. Theorem 11.17 of Nielsen and Chuang compares the relative entropy of this pair with the relative entropy of the pair , on the whole system.
A Quantum System
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system of two quantum systems and is the quantum system whose state space is the tensor product .✦
A state of a quantum system is a positive operator of unit trace on .✦
The reduced state of a state of is the state of obtained by tracing out against an orthonormal basis of , (1)✦ where is the identity on .
Relative Entropy
The relative entropy of a state with respect to a state of the same quantum system is the real number (2)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let and be quantum systems, and let and be states of the composite system such that the support of , the span of its eigenvectors with nonzero eigenvalue, is contained in the support of . Then their reduced states on satisfy (3)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over two states of the composite system of arbitrary quantum systems and , their reduced states (1) on , and the relative entropy (2) of each pair.
The library proves that the partial trace of a density operator on is a density operator on , so that and are states of and the left side of (3) is the relative entropy of two states.
