The Theorem
Theorem 11.11 is Lieb’s theorem, a statement about positive operators and their powers. Take positive operators and , an operator that carries the space on which acts into the space on which acts, with adjoint carrying the space of back to that of , and an exponent between and , and form the trace of , where and are the powers of and to the exponents and . Mix two such pairs as one mixes two density operators into an ensemble: with probabilities and , the pairs and give the pair . The theorem compares the trace for the mixed pair with the average, under the same probabilities, of the traces for the two pairs.
The library takes acting on a complex Hilbert space and on .
Positive Operators and Their Powers
An operator on is positive, written , if is real and nonnegative for every vector in . The positive operators on form the set , and those on the set .
The power of a positive operator , for a real exponent , is the operator with the same eigenvectors as and each eigenvalue replaced by : where , (1)
The function the theorem is about takes a pair in to the real part of the trace of the operator on : (2)
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be an operator from to a complex Hilbert space , and let . Then is jointly concave on the convex set of pairs of positive operators, so that for in , in and weights with , (3)✦ (4)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the positive operators on and on , their powers (1), and the trace on through which is defined in (2).
Besides the inequalities (3) and (4), the library proves that the pairs of positive operators form a convex set, the domain on which is concave.
