The Exercise

Let XX, YY, ZZ be random variables with finitely many values. Knowing ZZ, the pair X,YX,Y is never less uncertain than XX alone: H(X,Y|Z)≥H(X|Z)H(X,Y|Z) \ge H(X|Z).✦ The quantum analogue for three systems AA, BB, CC, with the von Neumann entropy in place of the Shannon entropy, fails already for qubits: S(A,B|C)S(A,B|C) can be smaller than S(A|C)S(A|C).✦ It can also be smaller than S(A|C)−S(B|C)S(A|C) - S(B|C), so the triangle inequality for the entropies of the pair A,BA,B and of AA and BB alone, S(A,B)=S(ρ)S(A,B) = S(\rho), S(A)=S(ρA)S(A) = S(\rho_A), and S(B)=S(ρB)S(B) = S(\rho_B), fails once both sides are conditioned on CC.

Classical Conditional Entropy

The Shannon entropy of a distribution pp on a finite set is H(p)=−∑ip(i)log⁡p(i),H(p) = -\sum_i p(i) \log p(i),(1)✦ with the natural logarithm, so that entropies are measured in nats. For a distribution p(x,y)p(x,y) on a product of two finite sets, the marginal of the second variable is pY(y)=∑xp(x,y)p_Y(y) = \sum_x p(x,y)✦, and the conditional entropy of XX given YY is H(X|Y)=H(p)−H(pY).H(X|Y) = H(p) - H(p_Y).(2)✦

For p(x,y,z)p(x,y,z) on a product of three finite sets, the marginal of the first and last variables is pXZ(x,z)=∑yp(x,y,z)p_{XZ}(x,z) = \sum_y p(x,y,z)✦, and H(X|Z)H(X|Z) is the conditional entropy (2) of pXZp_{XZ}. With the marginal pZ(z)=∑x,yp(x,y,z)p_Z(z) = \sum_{x,y} p(x,y,z), the entropy of the pair given ZZ is H(X,Y|Z)=H(p)−H(pZ).H(X,Y|Z) = H(p) - H(p_Z).(3)✦

Three Quantum Systems

A quantum system SS is described by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space✦, and every such space HH is the state space of a system.✦ The qubit is the system with state space ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2.✦ Two systems SS and TT form the composite system S⊗TS \otimes T, whose state space is the tensor product of theirs.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦

An identification ee of a system SS with a system TT is a linear isometric bijection from the state space of SS onto that of TT✦; it carries a state ρ\rho of SS to the operator eρe−1e \rho e^{-1} on the state space of TT.✦ For three systems, the regrouping α\alpha identifies A⊗(C⊗B)A \otimes (C \otimes B) with (A⊗C)⊗B(A \otimes C) \otimes B by u⊗(v⊗w)↦(u⊗v)⊗wu \otimes (v \otimes w) \mapsto (u \otimes v) \otimes w.✦

Let |j⟩|j\rangle and |k⟩|k\rangle be orthonormal bases of the state spaces of SS and TT. The partial traces of an operator MM on the state space of S⊗TS \otimes T are the operators Tr⁡TM=∑k(I⊗⟨k|)M(I⊗|k⟩),Tr⁡SM=∑j(⟨j|⊗I)M(|j⟩⊗I)\operatorname{Tr}_T M = \sum_k (I \otimes \langle k|)\, M\, (I \otimes |k\rangle), \qquad \operatorname{Tr}_S M = \sum_j (\langle j| \otimes I)\, M\, (|j\rangle \otimes I)(4) on the state spaces of SS and of TT. The maps I⊗|k⟩I \otimes |k\rangle and |j⟩⊗I|j\rangle \otimes I are the embeddings x↦x⊗|k⟩x \mapsto x \otimes |k\rangle and y↦|j⟩⊗yy \mapsto |j\rangle \otimes y, and I⊗⟨k|I \otimes \langle k| and ⟨j|⊗I\langle j| \otimes I are the restrictions x⊗y↦⟨k|y⟩xx \otimes y \mapsto \langle k|y\rangle\, x and x⊗y↦⟨j|x⟩yx \otimes y \mapsto \langle j|x\rangle\, y. The reduced state of a state ρ\rho of S⊗TS \otimes T on SS is ρS=Tr⁡Tρ\rho_S = \operatorname{Tr}_T \rho✦, and its reduced state on TT is ρT=Tr⁡Sρ\rho_T = \operatorname{Tr}_S \rho.✦

Quantum Conditional Entropy

The von Neumann entropy of a self adjoint operator is the Shannon entropy (1) of its eigenvalues✦, and that of a state ρ\rho is the entropy of its operator, S(ρ)=−tr⁡(ρlog⁡ρ)S(\rho) = -\operatorname{tr}(\rho \log \rho).✦ For a state ρ\rho of a composite system A⊗BA \otimes B, the conditional entropy of AA given BB is S(A|B)=S(ρ)−S(ρB).S(A|B) = S(\rho) - S(\rho_B).(5)✦

Let ρ\rho be a state of A⊗(C⊗B)A \otimes (C \otimes B) for three systems AA, BB, CC. Its reduced states are ρCB=Tr⁡Aρ\rho_{CB} = \operatorname{Tr}_A \rho on C⊗BC \otimes B, ρC=Tr⁡BρCB\rho_C = \operatorname{Tr}_B \rho_{CB} on CC, and ρAC=Tr⁡B(αρα−1)\rho_{AC} = \operatorname{Tr}_B (\alpha \rho \alpha^{-1}) on A⊗CA \otimes C, the state regrouped by α\alpha with BB traced out. The entropy of the pair A,BA,B given CC is S(A,B|C)=S(ρ)−S(ρC).S(A,B|C) = S(\rho) - S(\rho_C).(6)✦ The entropy of AA given CC is the conditional entropy (5) of ρAC\rho_{AC}, S(A|C)=S(ρAC)−S(ρC),S(A|C) = S(\rho_{AC}) - S(\rho_C),(7)✦ and the entropy of BB given CC is S(B|C)=S(ρCB)−S(ρC).S(B|C) = S(\rho_{CB}) - S(\rho_C).(8)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. For any nonnegative function p(x,y,z)p(x,y,z) on the product of three finite sets, H(X|Z)≤H(X,Y|Z).H(X|Z) \le H(X,Y|Z).(9)✦ Let AA, BB, CC be qubits. There is a state of A⊗(C⊗B)A \otimes (C \otimes B) with S(A,B|C)<S(A|C),S(A,B|C) < S(A|C),(10)✦ and there is a state of A⊗(C⊗B)A \otimes (C \otimes B) with S(A,B|C)<S(A|C)−S(B|C).S(A,B|C) < S(A|C) - S(B|C).(11)✦

What Is Checked

The classical inequality (9) is stated over the Shannon entropy (1) and the marginals pXZp_{XZ} and pZp_Z. The quantum statements are stated over states of three qubits, through the conditional entropies (6), (7) and (8), which are built from the von Neumann entropy, the partial traces (4) and the regrouping α\alpha.

About these constructions the library proves that a partial trace of a positive operator of unit trace is again positive of unit trace, so that ρS\rho_S and ρT\rho_T are states, and that conjugation by an isometry preserves positivity and trace, so that a state carried along an identification, αρα−1\alpha \rho \alpha^{-1} among them, is again a state.
