The Exercise
Let and be independent bits, each equal to or with probability , and let be their sum modulo . The exercise is to show that the information shares with the pair exceeds the information it shares with plus the information it shares with , so that mutual information is not subadditive.
The library states the inequality for the joint distribution of the three bits, in terms of the Shannon entropies of that distribution and of its marginals.
Entropy and Mutual Information
The Shannon entropy of a distribution on a finite set is the sum over outcomes of , with the natural logarithm, so that entropy is measured in nats, and with : (1)✦
The first marginal of a joint distribution of and on finite sets is the distribution of alone, obtained by summing out : (2)✦ The second marginal of is the distribution of alone, obtained by summing out : (3)✦
The mutual information of a joint distribution of and is the entropy of plus the entropy of less the joint entropy: (4)✦
Three Bits
The joint distribution of three bits , , , in which and are independent and fair and , is (5)✦
Grouping and into one variable with four values makes a joint distribution of the pair and : (6)✦ Summing out gives the joint distribution of and , (7)✦ and summing out gives the joint distribution of and : (8)✦
The three mutual informations of the exercise are those of these distributions under (4): of , of and of .
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let and be independent fair bits and , with the joint distribution of (5). Then (9)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the distribution of the three bits in (5), read as a distribution of and in (6) and summed to the distributions (7) and (8), and over the mutual information (4), built from the Shannon entropy (1) and the marginals (2) and (3). What the library proves about these constructions is the strict inequality (9).
