Exercise 11.17 - A pure qubit beside a maximally mixed one gives a mixed joint state with entropy S(B)S(B) less S(A)S(A)

A mixed state attaining the bound of Araki and Lieb.

The Exercise

For a state of two systems AA and BB, the inequality of Araki and Lieb bounds the entropy S(A,B)S(A,B) of the joint state from below by the entropies S(A)S(A) and S(B)S(B) of its two reduced states, S(A,B)≥|S(A)−S(B)|S(A,B) \geq |S(A) - S(B)|. A pure joint state attains the bound, with S(A,B)=0S(A,B) = 0 and S(A)=S(B)S(A) = S(B). The exercise asks for a mixed state that attains it too, with the larger entropy on BB.

Systems and States

A quantum system QQ is given by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system A⊗BA \otimes B of two systems AA and BB is the system whose state space is the tensor product of their state spaces.✦ The qubit is the system whose state space is ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2✦, with computational basis kets |0⟩=(1,0)|0\rangle = (1,0) and |1⟩=(0,1)|1\rangle = (0,1)✦.

A state ρ\rho of QQ is a density operator on the state space of QQ: a positive operator of unit trace.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of QQ is a unit vector in the state space of QQ, fixed physically up to a global phase✦; it determines the state |ψ⟩⟨ψ||\psi\rangle\langle\psi| of QQ, the projector onto |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle✦. A state ρ\rho of QQ is pure when ρ=|ψ⟩⟨ψ|\rho = |\psi\rangle\langle\psi| for some pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of QQ, and mixed otherwise.✦

The product state ρ⊗σ\rho \otimes \sigma of a state ρ\rho of AA and a state σ\sigma of BB is the state of A⊗BA \otimes B whose density operator is the tensor product of the two, acting as ρ\rho on the first factor and as σ\sigma on the second.✦ The maximally mixed state of a system QQ whose state space has dimension d≥1d \geq 1 is the state I/dI/d, the identity divided by dd; on the qubit it is I/2I/2.✦

The reduced state ρA\rho_A of a state ρ\rho of A⊗BA \otimes B is the state of AA obtained by tracing out BB✦, and the reduced state ρB\rho_B is the state of BB obtained by tracing out AA: ρA=Tr⁡Bρ,ρB=Tr⁡Aρ.\rho_A = \operatorname{Tr}_B \rho, \qquad \rho_B = \operatorname{Tr}_A \rho.(1)✦

Entropy

The von Neumann entropy S(ρ)S(\rho) of a state ρ\rho of QQ is the Shannon entropy of the eigenvalues of ρ\rho, measured in nats: S(ρ)=−tr⁡(ρln⁡ρ).S(\rho) = -\operatorname{tr}(\rho \ln \rho).(2)✦ For a state ρ\rho of A⊗BA \otimes B, the three entropies of the exercise are S(A,B)=S(ρ)S(A,B) = S(\rho), S(A)=S(ρA)S(A) = S(\rho_A) and S(B)=S(ρB)S(B) = S(\rho_B).

The Claim

The example is the product of the pure state |0⟩|0\rangle of a qubit AA with the maximally mixed state of a second qubit BB: ρ=|0⟩⟨0|⊗I2.\rho = |0\rangle\langle 0| \otimes \frac{I}{2}.(3)✦

Theorem 1. Let AA and BB be two qubits and ρ\rho the state (3) of A⊗BA \otimes B. Then ρ\rho is not pure: ρ≠|ψ⟩⟨ψ|for every pure state |ψ⟩ of A⊗B,\rho \neq |\psi\rangle\langle\psi| \quad \text{for every pure state } |\psi\rangle \text{ of } A \otimes B,(4)✦ and its entropy is that of BB less that of AA: S(A,B)=S(B)−S(A).S(A,B) = S(B) - S(A).(5)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the product state ρ\rho of (3), its reduced states (1), the von Neumann entropy (2) of each, and purity as equality with a projector |ψ⟩⟨ψ||\psi\rangle\langle\psi| onto a pure state of A⊗BA \otimes B. The projector onto a unit vector is a density operator, the tensor product of two density operators is again positive of unit trace, and so is the identity divided by the dimension, so the product state (3) is a state of A⊗BA \otimes B. Tracing out either factor of a state again gives a state, so the reduced states (1) are states of AA and of BB.
