The Exercise

Two qubits in states |qA⟩|q_A\rangle and |qB⟩|q_B\rangle are to come out of a controlled NOT (CNOT) gate as two encoded qubits, each held in a quantum system CC. The gate is applied beforehand, to a resource of four qubits numbered 11 to 44: qubits 1,21,2 and qubits 3,43,4 start as two Bell pairs |Φ+⟩|\Phi^+\rangle, and a CNOT acts on qubits 22 and 33 with 22 as the control. Then |qA⟩|q_A\rangle is measured together with qubit 11 in the Bell basis, and |qB⟩|q_B\rangle together with qubit 44. Qubits 22 and 33 are left in CNOT|qA⟩|qB⟩\mathrm{CNOT}\,|q_A\rangle|q_B\rangle up to a Pauli operator on each, fixed by the four bits of the two outcomes. The same holds when qubits 22 and 33 are held encoded, by a linear map EE from the qubit into CC. The exercise asks for the identity behind the protocol: the state of the six qubits before the measurements, written in the Bell bases of the two measured pairs.

Qubits and Gates

A quantum system SS is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A pure state ψ\psi of SS is a unit vector of the state space of SS, ‖ψ‖=1\lVert\psi\rVert = 1, determined physically up to a global phase.✦ The composite system S⊗TS\otimes T of two systems SS and TT is the system whose state space is the tensor product of theirs✦, and the product ψ⊗φ\psi\otimes\varphi of pure states of SS and TT is the pure state of S⊗TS\otimes T whose vector is the tensor product of their vectors.✦ The qubit QQ is the quantum system with state space ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2✦; its basis states |0⟩|0\rangle and |1⟩|1\rangle are the pure states with the standard basis vectors e0e_0 and e1e_1 as vectors.✦

A unitary UU of a system SS, a closed evolution of SS, is an operator on the state space of SS with U†U=UU†=1U^\dagger U = UU^\dagger = 1✦; it takes a pure state ψ\psi of SS to the pure state UψU\psi.✦ For unitaries UU and VV of SS, UU after VV is the unitary UVUV, first VV then UU✦, and the identity evolution is the unitary 11.✦ For unitaries UU of SS and VV of TT, the product unitary U⊗VU\otimes V is the unitary of S⊗TS\otimes T whose operator is the tensor product of theirs.✦ Its special cases U⊗1U\otimes 1 and 1⊗V1\otimes V are UU acting on the first system alone and VV acting on the second system alone.

The Pauli gates XX and ZZ are the unitaries of the qubit whose matrices in the basis |0⟩|0\rangle, |1⟩|1\rangle are X=(0110),Z=(100−1).X = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Z = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix}.(1) For bits xx and yy, the Pauli byproduct XyZxX^yZ^x is the unitary of the qubit that applies ZZ if x=1x = 1 and then XX if y=1y = 1, the identity standing in for either one whose bit is 00.✦

For a unitary UU of a system SS, the controlled gate C(U)C(U) is the unitary of Q⊗SQ\otimes S, a control qubit and the target SS, with operator C(U)=|0⟩⟨0|⊗1+|1⟩⟨1|⊗U.C(U) = |0\rangle\langle 0|\otimes 1 + |1\rangle\langle 1|\otimes U.(2)✦ The CNOT gate is the unitary C(X)C(X) of two qubits.

For bits xx and yy, the Bell vector |βxy⟩|\beta_{xy}\rangle is the vector of two qubits |βxy⟩=12(|0⟩|y⟩+(−1)x|1⟩|y‾⟩),y‾=y+1mod⁡2.|\beta_{xy}\rangle = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\bigl(|0\rangle|y\rangle + (-1)^x|1\rangle|\bar y\rangle\bigr), \qquad \bar y = y + 1 \bmod 2.(3)✦ The Bell state |Φ+⟩|\Phi^+\rangle is the pure state of two qubits whose vector is the unnormalised Bell vector |00⟩+|11⟩|00\rangle + |11\rangle divided by its norm 2\sqrt{2}.✦

The Resource

An identification ee of a quantum system SS with a system TT is a linear isometric bijection from the state space of SS onto that of TT✦; it relabels a pure state ψ\psi of SS as the pure state eψe\psi of TT.✦ Identifications compose✦ and have inverses✦, the identity map of a state space is one✦, and identifications ee of SS with S′S' and ff of TT with T′T' give their product e⊗fe\otimes f, an identification of S⊗TS\otimes T with S′⊗T′S'\otimes T'.✦ The elementary ones regroup factors: the regrouping α\alpha takes u⊗(v⊗w)u\otimes(v\otimes w) to (u⊗v)⊗w(u\otimes v)\otimes w✦, the swap takes u⊗vu\otimes v to v⊗uv\otimes u✦, and the interchange takes (a⊗b)⊗(c⊗d)(a\otimes b)\otimes(c\otimes d) to (a⊗c)⊗(b⊗d)(a\otimes c)\otimes(b\otimes d).✦

From these are built the regrouping RR of a register of four qubits, which brings its middle qubits together, and the regrouping PP of the six qubits of the protocol, the two data qubits followed by the four qubits of the resource, which puts each data qubit beside the resource qubit it is measured with, the two measured pairs first and the two output qubits last: R((a⊗b)⊗(c⊗d))=a⊗((b⊗c)⊗d),R\bigl((a\otimes b)\otimes(c\otimes d)\bigr) = a\otimes\bigl((b\otimes c)\otimes d\bigr),(4)✦ P((a⊗b)⊗((c⊗d)⊗(e⊗f)))=((a⊗c)⊗(b⊗f))⊗(d⊗e).P\Bigl((a\otimes b)\otimes\bigl((c\otimes d)\otimes(e\otimes f)\bigr)\Bigr) = \bigl((a\otimes c)\otimes(b\otimes f)\bigr)\otimes(d\otimes e).(5)✦ The first is the inverse of α\alpha followed by 1⊗α1\otimes\alpha✦, the second two interchanges with regroupings and a swap between them.✦

The CNOT on the middle qubits is the unitary 1⊗(CNOT⊗1)1\otimes(\mathrm{CNOT}\otimes 1) of the regrouped register Q⊗((Q⊗Q)⊗Q)Q\otimes((Q\otimes Q)\otimes Q), the CNOT on qubits 22 and 33 and the identity on qubits 11 and 44.✦ The CNOT teleportation resource |χ⟩|\chi\rangle is the pure state of four qubits obtained from two Bell pairs by regrouping with RR, applying the CNOT on the middle qubits and regrouping back: |χ⟩=R−1(1⊗(CNOT⊗1))R(|Φ+⟩⊗|Φ+⟩).|\chi\rangle = R^{-1}\bigl(1\otimes(\mathrm{CNOT}\otimes 1)\bigr)R\, \bigl(|\Phi^+\rangle\otimes|\Phi^+\rangle\bigr).(6)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let CC be a quantum system, EE a linear map from the state space of QQ to that of CC, and |qA⟩|q_A\rangle and |qB⟩|q_B\rangle two vectors of the state space of QQ. Then, with 11 the identity on the four measured qubits and the sums of bits in the exponents taken mod 22, (1⊗(E⊗E))P(|qA⟩|qB⟩⊗|χ⟩)=14∑x1,y1,x2,y2|βx1y1⟩|βx2y2⟩⊗(E⊗E)(Xy1Zx1+x2⊗Xy1+y2Zx2)CNOT|qA⟩|qB⟩.\begin{split} &\bigl(1\otimes(E\otimes E)\bigr)\,P\bigl(|q_A\rangle|q_B\rangle\otimes|\chi\rangle\bigr)\\ &\qquad= \frac{1}{4}\sum_{x_1,y_1,x_2,y_2}|\beta_{x_1y_1}\rangle|\beta_{x_2y_2}\rangle \otimes(E\otimes E)\bigl(X^{y_1}Z^{x_1+x_2}\otimes X^{y_1+y_2}Z^{x_2}\bigr)\, \mathrm{CNOT}\,|q_A\rangle|q_B\rangle. \end{split}(7)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the resource |χ⟩|\chi\rangle of (6) and the regrouping PP of (5) on the left, and over the Bell vectors (3), the Pauli byproducts and the CNOT gate on the right, for any linear map EE into any quantum system CC and any two vectors of the qubit.

The library proves that the matrices (1) are unitary and that the controlled gate (2) is unitary for every unitary UU.✦ Products and composites of unitaries are shown to be unitaries, which makes the CNOT on the middle qubits and every Pauli byproduct unitaries too. Finally, |Φ+⟩|\Phi^+\rangle has unit norm, and a product, a relabelling or a unitary image of pure states is again a pure state, so that |χ⟩|\chi\rangle is a pure state of four qubits.
