The Exercise
The Steane code stores one qubit in seven. Its logical operators and act on the encoded qubit as and act on a bare one, with the logical states and in place of and . On a bare qubit the Hadamard gate exchanges and by conjugation, and the exercise is the converse on the code. Let be a unitary on the seven qubits that keeps and in the code, with and . Up to a global phase, then does to and what the Hadamard gate does to and , which it sends to and .
A Register of Qubits
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ For a finite group , the group system is the quantum system whose state space is the space of complex functions on , with one basis vector for each element of .✦ The register of qubits is the group system of the group of bit vectors of length .✦ Its computational basis is the orthonormal basis indexed by the bit vectors , in which is the function equal to at and elsewhere.✦
A pure state of a system is a unit vector in the state space of , fixed physically up to a global phase.✦ A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of ✦, and a pure state gives the state , the projector onto its vector.✦ The overlap of two pure states of is the inner product of their vectors, conjugate linear in the first.✦
A unitary of is an operator on the state space of with .✦ The adjoint of a unitary of is the Hilbert space adjoint of , and the product of two unitaries and of applies first and then . A unitary carries a pure state to the pure state .✦
On the register, a bit vector gives the bit flip string , the unitary that applies the Pauli operator to exactly the qubits where has a , and a bit vector gives the phase flip string , built from the Pauli operator and diagonal in the computational basis: (1) with the sum and the dot product taken modulo .
The Steane Code
For a binary linear code of length and a bit vector of length , the coset state is the pure state of the register of qubits that superposes with equal amplitudes the basis states , one for each codeword of : (2)✦
The Steane code takes for the dual of a Hamming code of length , given by its parity check matrix.✦ The parity check matrix of the Hamming code is the matrix over whose th column is the binary numeral of , most significant bit on top: (3)✦ The Hamming code is the linear code of length over whose codewords are the words with . The dual Hamming code is the linear code of length over whose codewords are the words orthogonal to every codeword of ; it has dimension and eight codewords.
The logical zero and the logical one of the Steane code are the coset states of at and , each a sum of eight basis states of the register of seven qubits with amplitude : (4) A pure state of the register of seven qubits lies in the Steane code when it is a combination of the two logical states: (5)✦
The logical operators and of the Steane code are the flip strings (1) of the all ones word , with and the Pauli operators on the th qubit: (6)
For orthogonal pure states and of a system and complex amplitudes and with , the superposition is the pure state of the same system with that vector.✦ The encoded plus state and minus state of the Steane code are the superpositions of its logical states and with amplitudes and , respectively and : (7)✦ (8)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be a unitary of the register of seven qubits that exchanges the logical operators of the Steane code by conjugation, and , and suppose that and lie in the Steane code. Then (9)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over a unitary of the register of seven qubits and the constructions of the Steane code: the logical operators (6), the logical states (4) built on the dual Hamming code, the membership (5), and the encoded states (7) and (8), compared through their projectors and their overlaps.
The library proves that the two logical states are orthogonal, ✦, which makes and unit vectors, and that every coset state (2) has unit norm. It proves that the bit flip string, the isometry of the state space onto itself, is unitary, and so are the phase flip string, the adjoint and the product .
