The Exercise
The Steane code encodes one qubit in seven. Its stabilizer has six generators, Pauli strings on the seven qubits, and brought to a standard form, which here takes a relabelling of the qubits, they give the logical operators of the code directly. The exercise asks for the logical that the standard form gives, an operator fixed by two columns of three bits, called and , read off the generators, and asks that it act on the code as a logical should, exchanging the two logical states.
Seven Qubits
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A pure state of is a unit vector in the state space of .✦ A unitary of is an operator on the state space of with , and it carries a pure state of to the pure state .✦
The register of qubits is the system whose state space is , the space of complex functions on the bit strings of length ✦, with one computational basis vector for each ; these vectors form an orthonormal basis.✦ For a bit string of length , the bit flip string , with the Pauli operator of one qubit that exchanges and , is the unitary of the register that flips the qubits where has a , sending to .✦
The Steane Code
The Hamming code is defined by its parity check matrix , the binary matrix with three rows and seven columns whose th column is the binary numeral of , most significant bit on top: (1) The Hamming code is the linear code of the words with , and the dual Hamming code is its dual code , a code with eight codewords.
For a binary linear code of length and a word , the coset state is the pure state of the register of qubits (2)✦ The logical states of the Steane code are the coset states of at the zero word and at the word of all ones: (3)
The Standard Form
A single qubit Pauli has two check bits, its bit and its bit: for , for , for and for .✦ The check row of a Pauli string on qubits is the pair of binary vectors of length whose th entries are the bit and the bit of the Pauli that places on qubit .
In standard form the six generators of the Steane code are (4)✦ with the parts of forming the identity on the first three qubits and the parts of the identity on the next three. The column of the standard form holds the bits of on the seventh qubit, and the column those of : (5)✦ (6)✦ For two columns and of three bits, the standard form prescribes for the logical the check row (7)✦ The logical of the Steane code in standard form is the Pauli string (8)✦
The standard form numbers the qubits differently from the Hamming code. The relabelling is the permutation (9)✦ composed from the right, which sends to : qubit in the ordering of the Hamming code is qubit of the standard form. In that ordering becomes the Pauli string that places on each qubit the Pauli that places on qubit : (10)✦ The support word of is the part of its check row, (11) and as an operator on the register of seven qubits is the bit flip string .✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. The logical of the Steane code in standard form, , has the check row that the columns and of the standard form prescribe: (12)✦ Relabelled to the ordering of the Hamming code, as , it exchanges the two logical states: (13)✦ (14)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the six generators (4), the columns and read off them and the check row of the Pauli string ; its action on the code is stated over the bit flip string of the support word (11) and over the logical states (3).
