The Exercise
The Steane code stores one qubit in seven. Its logical basis states and are equal superpositions of computational basis states of seven qubits, built from the Hamming code. The exercise is to show that flipping every one of the seven qubits acts on the code as the logical : it takes to and back to .
A Quantum System
A quantum system is a physical object whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A pure state of is a unit vector in the state space of , , determined physically up to a global phase.✦ A unitary of , a closed system evolution of , is an operator on the state space of with .✦ It carries a pure state of to the pure state .✦
Each finite dimensional complex Hilbert space defines a quantum system, the one whose state space is .✦ For a finite set , taking for the space of complex functions on gives the system , with one computational basis vector for each element of .✦
Seven Qubits
For a finite set of elements, the register of qubits indexed by is the system of the group of bit vectors indexed by with entries in : qubits, one for each element of .✦ The computational basis of the register indexed by is the orthonormal basis of the state space of the register indexed by the bit vectors , where is the vector with a single entry at position .✦ The Steane code lives on the register indexed by , with basis states for .
For a bit vector indexed by , the bit flip string is the unitary on the register that applies the bit flip , which exchanges and , to exactly the qubits where has a : (1)✦ the sum of bit vectors taken bitwise modulo .
The Steane Code
The parity check matrix of the Hamming code is the matrix over with three rows and seven columns whose th column is the binary numeral of , most significant bit on top: (2)✦ The Hamming code is the linear code of length over whose codewords are the words with . The dual Hamming code of the Hamming code is the linear code of length over consisting of the words whose inner product modulo with every codeword of vanishes; it has dimension and eight codewords.✦
For a binary linear code and a bit vector , the coset state is the pure state of the register that superposes with equal amplitudes the basis states , one for each codeword of : (3)✦
The Steane logical states and of the register of seven qubits are the coset states of the dual Hamming code at the zero word and at the word of all ones: (4)✦ (5)✦
The logical of the Steane code is the bit flip string of the word of all ones, a bit flip on each of the seven qubits: (6)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. The logical of the Steane code exchanges its two logical states: (7)✦ and (8)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the Steane logical states (4) and (5), coset states of the dual Hamming code built from the parity check matrix (2), and over the logical , a unitary of the register of seven qubits applied to them as pure states.
The library proves that the coset state has unit norm for every binary linear code and every bit vector . The map is a linear isometry of the state space of the register onto itself, and a linear isometry of a state space onto itself is a unitary✦; is the unitary so obtained.
