The Exercise
A Pauli string on qubits acts on each qubit with one of the matrices , , , . In the stabilizer formalism it is recorded as a row of the check matrix: bits, the first marking the qubits on which has an factor, the last those on which it has a factor.✦ The exercise asks to show that two Pauli strings and commute as operators if and only if , with arithmetic modulo two and the matrix that exchanges the two halves of a row.✦
Pauli Strings
The Pauli matrices are the four complex matrices (1)✦
A Pauli string on qubits is a choice of one index for each qubit . The operator of a Pauli string on qubits is the tensor product of the chosen matrices, an operator on the dimensional state space of the qubits; in the computational basis, with rows and columns labelled by bit strings and , each matrix element is a product over the qubits: (2)✦
The Check Matrix
The check bits of a single qubit Pauli matrix are the pair of elements of consisting of its bit and its bit, assigned as follows: (3)✦
The part and the part of a Pauli string are the vectors in whose entries on qubit are the bit and the bit of .✦ The check matrix row of is the vector of bits made of the two parts, the part first: (4)✦
The symplectic matrix over exchanges the two halves of a vector of bits, with the identity on one half: (5)✦
The twisted inner product of two vectors and in is the element of obtained as the dot product of with : (6)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. For any two Pauli strings and on qubits, (7)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the operators of Pauli strings (2), built from the four matrices (1), and over the check matrix rows (4), read from the check bits (3) and paired by the twisted inner product (6) with the symplectic matrix (5).
