Exercise 10.24 - A linear code lies in its dual exactly when GTG=0G^{T} G = 0

Weak self-duality read off the generator matrix.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

A classical linear code is often handed over as a generator matrix GG, an n×kn \times k matrix whose kk columns span the code inside the space of words of length nn. The exercise asks to show that the code is weakly self-dual, contained in its own dual, if and only if GTG=0G^{T} G = 0.✦

Codes and Their Duals

Fix a field KK. A linear code CC of length nn over KK is a subspace of KnK^n, and its elements are its codewords. The code CC generated by an n×kn \times k matrix GG over KK is the linear code of length nn given by the column space of GG, the set of codewords GxGx obtained by encoding each message x∈Kkx \in K^k of kk symbols: C={Gx:x∈Kk}.C = \{\, Gx : x \in K^k \,\}.(1)

Two words x,y∈Knx, y \in K^n are orthogonal when their dot product vanishes, x⋅y=∑i=1nxiyi=0.x \cdot y = \sum_{i=1}^{n} x_i y_i = 0 .(2) The dual code C⟂C^{\perp} of a linear code CC is the linear code of all words orthogonal to every codeword of CC, C⟂={y∈Kn:x⋅y=0 for all x∈C}.C^{\perp} = \{\, y \in K^n : x \cdot y = 0 \text{ for all } x \in C \,\}.(3)✦ A linear code CC is weakly self-dual if it is contained in its dual, C⊆C⟂.C \subseteq C^{\perp} .(4)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let GG be an n×kn \times k matrix over KK, and let CC be the code it generates. Then C⊆C⟂⇔GTG=0.C \subseteq C^{\perp} \quad \Longleftrightarrow \quad G^{T} G = 0 .(5)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the code generated by an arbitrary n×kn \times k matrix GG over KK and over weak self-duality (4), with the dual (3) taken under the dot product of (2).
